Lost somewhat in the fuss over the Meryl Streep-Donald Trump beef is another speech that created a ruckus at the Golden Globes. The Thomson Reuters Foundation reports that actor Tom Hiddleston, who picked up a statue for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for “The Night Manager,” apologized to aid workers after taking heat over his speech.
“Hiddleston, a UNICEF ambassador, was accused of being a ‘white savior’ after telling the audience how he met some Medecins Sans Frontieres medics in South Sudan last year who told him they ‘binge-watched’ the series while holed up,” Reuters reports. “He said the idea that he could provide some relief for people ‘fixing the world in the places where it is broken made me immensely proud.'”
After receiving criticism for his comments, Hiddleston, 35, said his “nerves got the better of me.”
He wrote on Facebook today: “My speech at the Golden Globes last night was inelegantly expressed … I was very nervous and the words just came out wrong.”
He added: “Sincerely, my only intention was to salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), and World Food Programme.”
What the Hell is wrong with the world? No wonder Trump got elected.
My thoughts exactly. I felt the same way a few weeks ago when Steve Martin got blasted over his tweet about Carrie Fisher. Ridiculous. This is the same extreme PC that we’re seeing on college campuses that has everyone walking on egg shells. I abhor Trump, but I understand his appeal to people who are sick of this kind of nonsense.
I heard it live during the awards that night and didn’t think anything of it. And I’m pretty thin-skinned myself, haha. Seriously, maybe it wasn’t the most well thought-out thing to say, but I felt it expressed his true feeling of providing some joy, entertainment to an audience.
Social media has made everyone so touchy about everything anyone has said. It’s ridiculous.
