How a Wine Brand Is Sneaking Into the Super Bowl Ad Lineup

A wine brand is doing an “end run” to become the first wine to place ads in the Super Bowl in 40 years. The New York Post reports that the Australian wine label Yellow Tail is “doing an end run around the Super Bowl, buying up local ad spots of Fox stations across the country for a new 30-second commercial.”

The report notes that Anheuser-Busch owns the national in-game alcohol category, but Yellow Tail is breaking in by purchasing local spots in 70 markets, which are expected to reach 100 million households.

“Yellow Tail, distributed in the US by Deutsch Family Wines and Spirits, says it is the first wine brand to advertise on the Super Bowl in 40 years,” The Post reports. “The spot, which will air in the first half of the game, features a guy in a yellow suit, Australian model Ellie Gonsalves — and, yes, a few kangaroos. The commercial was directed by Harald Zwart, and was created by ad agency Burns Group.”
