L.A. Wins $1 Billion George Lucas Project

A massive project from “Star Wars” creator George Lucas has settled on Los Angeles as its future home. The Los Angeles Times reports that the $1 billion Museum of Narrative Art will be built in the city’s Exposition Park.

The L.A. plan beat out a plan to build the museum on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.

The paper reports that the futuristic museum will house Lucas’ “personal collection of fine and popular art, including ephemera related to his ‘Star Wars’ franchise.”

“The rivalry had pitted two cities in the competition not only for Lucas’ collection and the tourism it will bring, but also for the thousands of jobs that backers say it will create,” The Times reports. “Lucas has said he will fund the project to the tune of about $1 billion, including building costs, his art and an endowment of at least $400 million.”

Said L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti: “It feels like this incredible gift has come home. I always thought Los Angeles was the natural place to spread the vision of George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, to make art and creativity accessible and inspirational to the next generation. It’s a natural place to have this museum in the creative capital of the world and in the geographic center of the city. It’s a banner day for L.A.”

  1. It’s too bad Lucas couldn’t find a more geologically stable place for his museum. It’s also a crying shame that it and so much pop culture that already exists on the west coast will eventually be lost to us because those (who one would think should be possessed of the stringent common sense to see that none of it should be located in such geologically active areas) apparently haven’t got a lick of sense… common or otherwise.

    • Friend, you are what is generally known as a “whacko” … until you turn out to be right.

      • What was I thinking. I guess you must be right. Disastrous earthquakes have never occurred in California. That place is rock solid.

  2. So glad Chicago said no to this project. Illinois wouldn’t know what to do with all of that money. It goes against our principles…bringing jobs into Illinois.
