Convicted mass murderer Charles Manson is reportedly seriously ill and was moved from his cell in a state prison in California’s Central Valley to a hospital, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The report cites a source saying Manson is seriously ill. His medical issue remains undisclosed. Officials with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation would not comment.

The report quotes department spokeswoman Terry Thornton saying: “We do not disclose inmate movements for safety and security reasons.”

Manson has been imprisoned since he and his followers were convicted in the 1969 killings of actress Sharon Tate and six other people.

“Manson, now 82, has had ‘hundreds’ of rules violations, prison officials say, and has been in trouble for having a cellphone and a homemade weapon while incarcerated,” The Times reports. “Manson has been denied parole 12 times. His next parole hearing is scheduled for 2027, when he will be 92. He has been in prison since 1971 and is serving his time at Corcoran State Prison.”
