In a possible merger that would be likely to create a “massive clash of cultures,” The New York Post is reporting that National Enquirer owner American Media Inc. has surfaced as a possible suitor for Time Inc., publisher ot Time, InStyle, People and Sports Illustrated.

The report quotes a “well-placed financial source” saying Tuesday: “We’ve heard American Media is interested. In today’s financial climate, it makes sense.”

Maybe so, but a former Time Inc. editor, asked by The Post what the reaction might be among his former colleagues, reportedly said: “I think their heads will explode.”

The Post adds: “The speculation is that AMI would team up with the perceived No. 1 suitor, Meredith Corp., the publisher of Better Homes and Gardens, Midwest Living, Martha Stewart Living and AllRecipes.”
