If You’re a Fan of Archie Comics, the Archies or Josie and the Pussycats … You May Have to Look Away

A new video released Wednesday by Warner Bros. TV in connection with the new Archie Comics-based CW TV show “Riverdale” makes it clear that today’s incarnation of the Archie franchise, well, isn’t exactly your father’s Archie Comics.

In the clip, the new live-action Josie and the Pussycats do a cover of the syrupy sweet classic “Sugar, Sugar,” which was a hit in 1969 for the Archies — a fictional band made up of 1960s cartoon characters from “The Archie Show.”

In press material supporting the release of the video, Warner Bros. says the new version “adds a little spice to the sweet classic.” Your mileage may vary …

  1. I wonder what Ron Dante and Andy Kim think (they were the actual vocalists of The Archies), to say nothing of Jeff Barry (who co-wrote the song with Kim, and produced the original). Dante is known to like everybody keeping the music he helped originate alive, so there’s that. dL

  2. If you are a fan of the Archie Comics, you need to not have your eyes & brain damaged by watching this show. The comics were light & fun. This show is anything but!

  3. Hmmmm, I don’t remember the original song lyrics listing the bootylicious “measurements” of our fictional “Candy Girl.” Also, isn’t it great to see that all of Riverdale’s Cheerleaders have a future as strippers…
