NBC is said to be in talks with FremantleMedia to revive “American Idol,” which shut down almost a year ago after a 15-season run on Fox. Variety broke the news this morning.

“According to sources with knowledge of the discussions, NBC has been pitched a revival of the long-running singing competition by producer Fremantle and is now mulling options for how to integrate the show into its programming slate,” Variety reports. “One possibility being considered: cutting NBC’s existing singing competition ‘The Voice’ from two cycles a year to one.”

NBC is reportedly the leading candidate for the show, which is being shopped by Fremantle. Sources caution that there is no deal in place at this time.

The show, which was a ratings juggernaut in its early years on Fox, wrapped in April 2016 after steep ratings declines in later seasons.

  1. Get some decent judges and that might be ok..(

  2. Did anyone learn anything from the American Idol/X Factor combo? This will obviously dilute the value and interest in both properties. NBC thinking dumb again.

  3. This is way too soon, unless it’s a gambit for NBC to try to keep it away from another network. Regardless, not enough time has elapsed and viewers do not have enough hunger this soon for a return.
