New No. 1 Show in Cable News

The ratings landscape in cable news is experiencing a shakeup, with perennial leader Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News Channel program being overtaken by rival Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maddow’s 9 p.m. show was No. 1 in prime time for the week of March 6 in the key news demo of viewers 25-54, where Maddow averaged 624,000 viewers.

“Maddow, who makes no bones about her leftist take, beat her direct competition Tucker Carlson by 14 percent in the targeted news demo,” THR reports. “That kind of win for MSNBC over Fox News, its best showing since the week of the 2012 election, last happened in October 2016. What’s more compelling is how many people are tuning in. Her average 2.62 million viewers marks nearly an eight-year high.”

The comparisons between Maddow and O’Reilly for the week come with a disclaimer, as O’Reilly, whose show is on at 8 p.m., had a substitute sitting in for him on Friday — and O’Reilly’s numbers for Monday through Thursday topped those of Maddow by 30,000 in the news demo.
