Suicide has been ruled as the cause of the death after the discovery of the body of Chris Cornell, lead singer for the iconic grunge rock band Soundgarden, in a Detroit hotel room.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Cornell was found dead this morning in his room at the MGM Grand in downtown Detroit. Cornell was 52.

Billboard reported that Cornell was found at about midnight.

The Washington Post reported that the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cornell’s death a suicide by hanging.

The Free Press report quotes Dontae Freeman, digital media relations manager for the Detroit police department, saying Cornell’s body was found after his wife called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell.

Freeman added: “He was found in his room with a band around his neck.”

The group reportedly gave a concert at the Fox Theatre just hours before Cornell’s death.
