GQ Magazine Sparks Controversy With Its ‘Citizen of the Year’ Selection

Reaction has been intense since GQ magazine revealed that its “Citizen of the Year” is Colin Kaepernick.

“He’s been vilified by millions and locked out of the NFL — all because he took a knee to protest police brutality,” GQ says in its report on the selection. “But Colin Kaepernick’s determined stand puts him in rare company in sports history: Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson — athletes who risked everything to make a difference.”

The GQ report adds: “Approximately 90 men are currently employed as quarterbacks in the NFL, as either starters or reserves, and Colin Kaepernick is better — indisputably, undeniably, flat-out better — than at least 70 of them. He is still, to this day, one of the most gifted quarterbacks on earth. And yet he has been locked out of the game he loves — blackballed — because of one simple gesture: He knelt during the playing of our national anthem. And he did it for a clear reason, one that has been lost in the yearlong storm that followed. He did it to protest systemic oppression and, more specifically, as he said repeatedly at the time, police brutality toward black people.”

Not everyone is thrilled with the selection. Kaepernick has surged as a topic on social media, where his supporters and detractors have been waging a war of words.

Conservative talk radio host and former Congressman Joe Walsh tweeted today: “JJ Watt raised $37 Million for Hurricane Harvey victims, yet cop-hater Colin Kaepernick is named Citizen of the Year by GQ? What BS.”

Here’s a clip of Max Kellerman and Stephen A. Smith discussing the selection of Kaepernick this morning on ESPN’s “First Take” …

  1. 100% disagree with this…

  2. To compare this worthless POS with Ali and Robinson is a disgrace. GQ is an irrelevant rag that nobody reads.

  3. The Houston Texans just signed Josh Johnson as their backup quarterback. He hasn’t played a regular season game since 2013. And the NFL isn’t colluding against Kaepernick? In 2013 Kaepernick took the 49ers to the NFC Championship game.

  4. Yup Guilty, in 2013 !! Cue up the old Jethro Tull song “Living in the Past.” This is a stunt just to get people to remember there is a magazine called GQ. Trouble is…nobody cares.
