Will Lauer Receive His Millions From NBC?

In the wake of Matt Lauer’s firing by NBC this week over allegations of sexual misbehavior, the network is reportedly determined not to give him a payout on his salary, which is said to have been as much as $25 million a year.

The AP cites a source at the network saying that Lauer has been negotiating with the network as he tries to get what’s left on his latest contract, which runs through 2018. Lauer was reportedly one of television’s highest-paid journalists.

“But NBC won’t agree, said the person, who spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because a personnel matter was involved,” the AP reports. “Some NBC News employees who raised the question of Lauer’s compensation at a staff meeting were told that he was fired ‘for cause’ and wouldn’t be paid beyond his last day worked, according to a Variety report Friday.”

The AP also reports that NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said today that an internal review into Lauer’s alleged misconduct is under way, including examining how it happened and why it wasn’t stopped earlier.

“In a company-wide memo released publicly, Lack said those are among the questions NBC employees are asking in the wake of the ‘Today’ host’s firing for what Lack labeled ‘appalling behavior,'” the AP reports. “A team of NBCUniversal legal and human resources leaders have started a ‘thorough and timely review’ of what occurred and how the company can foster greater transparency and mutual respect, Lack said in the memo.”

Lack added in the memo: “At the conclusion of the review we will share what we’ve learned, no matter how painful, and act on it.”

  1. If they refuse to pay Matt off, we may finally find out what, if anything, is going on at NBC. Was Matt aware that Mgmt, was allowing this type of behavior, despite knowledge? Did Matt know about others that are still employed in Mgmt, or still involved at the program level on or off air? If he does, this will put NBC in a difficult situation if they don’t settle.
