Conan Getting Ready

May 22, 2009  •  Post A Comment

The New York Times magazine takes a look at new “Tonight” Show host Conan O’Brien, who was promised the 11:30 time slot five years ago. “In 2004, 2009 sounded absurdly far away,” Mr. O’Brien tells the Times. Now the biggest competition for “The Tonight Show” may come from NBC itself, the paper says. “[Jay] Leno’s continued nightly presence makes it more difficult for O’Brien to assume full ownership of the show.”

  1. It was a stupid deal to keep Conan.
I like him but if he wanted to go, they should have let him go.
This is, was and always will be a complete slap in the face of nice-guy Leno who was the one who obliged and stepped aside unnecessarily.

  2. As soon as conan start, I’m going to stop watching the Tonight Show, and start watch David Letterman. I have been a Tonight Show fan since Steve Allen, but conan doesn’t even come close to matching any of the Tonight Show host. I’ll be watching Jay at 10:00pm.

  4. I’m going to watch Conan. I am so sick of people damning him as a bad guy when he’s really one of the classiest, nicest guys in the business, not to mention the fact that he’s perhaps a truer heir apparent to Johnny Carson than Leno. If any of his critics actually looked at his work, you could easily compare his self-deprecating, sardonic, sense of humor and comic timing to Mr. Carson’s.
Yeah, Leno played the part of the victim to a tee, claiming like he was pushed out. He didn’t have to do that, and Conan would still be on and a whole lot richer than he is now (NBC would have had to pay Conan a $50 million golden parachute if he didn’t get the Tonight Show slot and he still would have left the network). Leno could have moved on, left NBC for other broadcasting ventures, primarily ABC or Fox, and give them the brown-eyed salute for getting rid of him, but instead, he whined loud enough to let NBC keep him in some capacity.
Leno stays on filling up a nightly spot at the end of their moronic primetime lineup while Conan O’Brien is once again Leno’s follow-up, second place in the network’s eyes.
I’ll root for Conan because so many people aren’t, which is a shame.
