One of the pioneering broadcasters to use sports highlights clips on TV has died, the New York Times reports.

Washington D.C. television sports reporter George Michael died on Thursday, Dec. 24, at age 70 of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Michael’s Sunday night “The George Michael Sports Machine” was the first nationally syndicated sports show to make extensive use of the clips, which are now a staple of shows such as ESPN’s “SporstCenter.”
