NBC’s ‘Parenthood’ Opens Modestly, While Fox’s ‘Idol’ Rolls On

The heavily promoted "Parenthood" on NBC posted fairly modest numbers, which could spell a disappointing run for the Ron Howard-produced series, tvbythenumbers.com reports.

"Parenthood" opened with a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is in the ballpark of the openings of last year’s "Southland" and "My Own Worst Enemy." That’s not heartening considering the advertising blitz "Parenthood" was given during the Olympics. Its lead-in, "The Biggest Loser," dipped 11% from its last airing two weeks ago to a 3.1 rating, which may explain "Parenthood’s" start.

Fox’s "American Idol" had zero problems capturing the night, grabbing an 8.6 rating in the 18-49 demo. Year-to-year, "Idol" is off by 5% in the same demo.

On ABC, "Lost" took a tumble by 13%, ending the night with a 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demo, which is a season low.

CBS arrived soft after a Olympics-induced hibernation. "NCIS" was solid with a 4.1 rating, but "NCIS: LA" dropped 24% to a 3.1 rating. "The Good Wife," no longer facing off against a weak "Jay Leno Show," dipped 13% to a 2.7 rating.
