The MTV Video Music Awards has tapped Chelsea Handler of the E! network series "Chelsea Lately" as its host, marking the first woman to emcee the event since Roseanne Barr in 1994, reports the New York Times.

“If there’s one awards show that I should be hosting, it’s probably this one,” Handler says. “My personality probably wouldn’t jell with the Emmys or the Golden Globes.” MTV general manager Stephen K. Friedman said Handler’s college fan base made her an attractive choice for the role. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on Sept. 12 and Handler says she plans to air a week of music-award-focused shows the week before that on "Chelsea Lately," the article adds.
