LCD TV sets outsold plasma units during the fourth quarter of 2006, proving last year’s sales forecasts correct.
LCDs are available in more screen sizes than are plasma sets, and for the fourth quarter LCDs were the only display technology to enjoy revenue growth, up 72 percent from the previous year, according to a study released by DisplaySearch. LCDs also overtook plasma sets in the 40- to 44-inch category for the first time.
Among LCDs, Sony was the top brand in terms of revenue, overtaking Samsung, while Panasonic continued to dominate the plasma market.
LCD prices fell 21 percent last year, while plasma prices fell 29 percent.
Overall, global TV unit shipments were up 26 percent, with North American TV sales growing faster than those of any other region.
