NATAS Reveals Broadband Emmy Nominees

After receiving the green light from arbitrators Monday, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Tuesday announced nominees for broadband Emmys to be given out at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards Sept. 24 in New York.
New York-based NATAS, which sponsors the Daytime and News & Documentary Emmy competitions, and the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which sponsors the Prime Time Emmys, have locked horns over NATAS’ unilateral attempts to branch into new media and create new Emmy awards. Under an agreement struck when the two groups split acrimoniously in 1977, neither group is allowed to create new awards without the agreement of the other group.
The overall dispute is scheduled to be heard in October by a panel of the American Arbitration Association.
On June 22, ATAS asked the AAA for interim relief and a standstill of NATAS plans. However, on Monday, the AAA panel ruled that NATAS could continue with its previously announced Broadband Emmy Awards and with its plans to create a “peer group,” the National Academy of Media Arts & Sciences, to attract membership from the new-media world but not to give Emmys.
The list of broadband Emmy nominees is dominated by print organizations. Four nominations each went to entries that appeared on pbs.org/frontlineworld and on washingtonpost.com. Material that appeared on freep.com (the Detroit Free Press Web site) garnered three nominations. Entries that had appeared on sfgate.com (the San Francisco Chronicle’s Web site) and mediastorm.org earned two nominations each. One nomination apiece went to songofsongs.org, stagework.org.uk, nationalgeographic.com and newsweek.com.
“The nominees in four categories — current news coverage, documentary/nonfiction, arts/lifestyle/culture, and regional news coverage — represent a broad cross-section of media entities involved in the creation of video for the Internet, cell phones, portable media players and other devices,” NATAS President and CEO Peter Price said Tuesday. “In fact, we are seeing many media companies that built their reputations in print reporting now excelling in news and documentary production for ‘small-screen television.’ It is NATAS’ goal to play a leadership role in recognizing and encouraging this new generation of video producers.”
Mr. Price noted one of the nominees, “Song of Songs,” a moving story of relationships inspired by the producer’s grandparents’ 63rd wedding anniversary, entered the Broadband Emmy competition via the MySpace promotion, which NATAS began earlier this year in order to reach out to user-generated video producers.
“This year’s nominees for the Broadband Emmy Awards covered a broad range of topics, including the news of the year — the crisis in Darfur, the AIDS pandemic in Africa, the pain of the U.S. military at war — as well as stories that might not have made it to broadcast television’s evening news, but are equally compelling and deserve to be told,” Av Westin, veteran ABC News executive and co-chairman of the NATAS News & Documentary Awards committee.
Mr. Westin, who was instrumental in developing the competition guidelines for this new Emmy award, noted the Emmy Awards’ recognition of broadband news and documentary programming expanded from one award in 2006 (awarded to washingtonpost.com for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina) to four this year. He said entries far exceeded expectations, both in quantity and quality.
