Insider: News Emmy Sights and Sounds

Sep 30, 2007  •  Post A Comment

There’s no better time for a little exercise in who wore what and why than when The Insider has spent almost four whole hours taking note of everything at the 28th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
The littlest attendee last week was Ana Cowie, in an appropriately girly blue-and-white and lightly sparkled dress. She attended with her mother, Cara Mertes, who was there to share in the special award for excellence given to P.O.V./American Documentary, of which she was executive director and executive producer before moving to Los Angeles last year to become director of the Sundance documentary film program.
If young Ana was the knockout of tomorrow, CBS News’ Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan was the knockout of the night.
She picked up her Emmy for a two-parter about Marines on a bloody front line in Iraq wearing a gown fit for a post-modern princess: an oh-so-packable concoction of crinkly metallic gold fabric over a tulle petticoat attached to a rhinestoned wow-boy! bodice scooped out in the front and laced up the back. She paired the dress with an understated rhinestone necklace from the same South African boutique — an interesting contrast to the image of Ms. Logan on the job in casual shirt and jeans in Iraq.
Ann Curry went metallic, too, picking up her Emmy for reporting from Darfur in a subtly silver number that was a basic sleeveless dress until you got to the long, angular hemline.
Ms. Curry’s “Today” fourth-hour co-anchor Hoda Kotb vivaciously worked the cocktail-hour crowd in a little black dress that proved LBDs never, ever go out of style.
“CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric, one of the presenters, also chose an LBD, hers featuring armholes cut up to her shoulder bones and a waist-length cape treatment in back.
CNN’s Soledad O’Brien wore a structured but form-fitting gown that wrapped her in satiny white from spaghetti straps to ankles.
Bob Woodruff, the ABC newsman whose recovery from a bomb blast in Iraq in 2006 is nothing less than miraculous, earned a standing ovation when he walked on stage to present an award, the scars from his head and face wounds adding a slightly rakish air to his still-stunning looks. “It’s good to be here this year,” he said.
Nothing could top the portion of the program in which former ABC newsman Ted Koppel received the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Two of the three exec producers who paid tribute to Mr. Koppel’s storied career, Tom Bettag and Leroy Sievers (looking hearteningly robust for a man blogging his way through a second bout with a whack-a-mole cancer), have worked with him at Discovery Channel since he left ABC at the end of 2005. Now Ms. Couric’s exec producer, Rick Kaplan declared, “I love Ted Koppel.” (Mr. Koppel later retorted: “Rick, you slut.”) Human rights activist/Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said his friend embodies the concept “Think higher and feel deeper.”
“The Daily Show” anchor Jon Stewart kvetched, “I am so tired of following Elie Wiesel,” and then proposed to drive Mr. Wiesel over to visiting Holocaust doubter and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s hotel room “and show him you exist.”
The surprise hit of the night was Grace Anne Dorney Koppel, in a black-on-black evening pants ensemble, billing her appearance as “payback time.” She delivered one punchline after another and referred the rapt audience to the program for the sentimental stuff about her husband of 40 years.
When it came time for him to speak, Mr. Koppel gave as good as he got, whether in jest or in earnest.
The best, though, was three verses of a song he wrote to explain to his wife why “any place you’re not is a place I wouldn’t want to be.” Talk about your lifetime achievement.

  1. Erecting a Mosque at Ground Zero has got to be the ignoramus plot during the history of human beings, I honestly do think it is purposely intended, at best, to insight controversy. I am not much of a conspiracy theorist but yet this is certainly possibly shameful or noxious, perhaps both. winnie
