ESPN has snagged exclusive rights to broadcast the first two rounds of golf’s “The Masters Tournament” with matches beginning in April. The deal ends USA Network’s two-decade run of broadcasting the event. CBS will continue to air the event’s finals.
The Masters, one of four major championships in men’s professional golf and the first on the calendar each year, is held annually in Augusta, Ga.
Mike Tirico will host ESPN’s portion of the telecasts.
“With the worldwide reach of ESPN, and their demonstrated leadership in new media, we think ESPN is uniquely positioned to showcase the Masters and golf to new audiences,” said Billy Payne, chairman of the Masters Tournament and Augusta National Golf Club.
As part of ESPN’s telecasts, ESPN and ESPN HD will present live first- and second-round coverage from 4-7 p.m. each day. The telecasts will be replayed in prime time each night from 8-11 p.m.
ESPN Deportes, the company’s Spanish-language U.S. sports network, also will televise the first and second rounds from 4-7 p.m. each day.
ESPN Classic will televise official Masters films on the Wednesday and Thursday leading up to the first-round telecast.
“For sports fans, the Masters represents a hallowed rite of spring, with its rich tradition and indelible imagery,” said ESPN President George Bodenheimer. “We are honored by the opportunity to work with the Tournament to help it achieve its goal of growing the game of golf around the world.”
ESPN also announced that the company, along with the San Diego International Sports Council and Qualcomm Stadium, will launch a new action-sports championship event from the ESPN X Games team, the Moto X World Championships.
The annual event will feature Moto X riders from around the world competing for the title of Moto X World Champion in a variety of disciplines, including Freestyle, SuperMoto, Best Trick, Step Up and Moto X Racing. The inaugural event is scheduled to take place April 12-13 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
“Given the tremendous success and excitement of Moto X at the X Games, we are very excited to present our first event dedicated exclusively to Moto X,” said Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN content development. “The Moto X World Championships will determine the top Moto X freestylers and racers in the world, allowing riders to showcase their talents and the awesome progression of their sport on one of the biggest stages ever. We can’t think of a better place than San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium for an event of this magnitude.”
