‘Joe’s Diner’ Ad Campaign Mixes Current NFL Exploits With Humor

Nov 27, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Joe MontanaThe Chicago Bears’ Devin Hester ran all over the Denver Broncos on Sunday, returning a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns, and was the talk of the sports world on Monday.
He also was the talk of the NFL Network’s new ad campaign, “Joe’s Diner,” as it shot Monday in downtown Los Angeles.
At the diner, Matt, the resident Patriots fan, talks with fantasy football-obsessed Stan. Stan asks Matt if he could take down Mr. Hester if he were loose in the diner.
“I’m a ‘genetical’ freak,” Matt responds, accenting his vowels with a hard New England drawl. Holding out his arms, “I’ve got a nine-foot wingspan. It’d be like an eagle catching a Chihuahua in a shoebox.”
The crew filming the spot cracks up over the ad-lib.
Allan Broce, president and creative director of Triple Double, the creative team behind the ads, said he took offense at the way sports fans are typically portrayed on television.
“It’s all face-painters and foam fingers,” he said.
But the “Joe’s Diner” ads allow a realistic portrayal of how football fans talk to each other, incorporating current events and a pinch of irreverence, Mr. Broce said.
In order to capture the immediacy of the sport, the ads are scripted directly after Sunday’s games and filmed every other Monday.
“It’s a ride. We were up late last night,” Mr. Broce said.
Mr. Hester’s breakout game scrapped Mr. Broce’s original plan to shoot the ad about the Redskins, who lost on Sunday. The ads are promoting a Bears/Redskins match on the NFL Network.
“Everybody’s always making fun of somebody else’s team,” said Joe Montana, the Joe of Joe’s Diner. The ads are “pretty typical of what you see in a lot of neighborhood places.”
Mr. Montana takes on the role of Joe Clifford (using his own middle name), the owner of a diner.
Matt asks if he can lay down sod in the diner to take down Mr. Hester. Joe, stirring a pot of chili, responds quickly, “Nobody’s layin’ any sod.”
Mr. Montana represents the “all-American quarterback,” according to Kevin Balluff, director of on-air promotions at the NFL Network.
“You want to find a character who everyone knows who he is,” Mr. Balluff said of choosing Mr. Montana as the face for the ads.
Time for another take.
This time, Matt riffs that he’s experienced at catching lightning as a former junior varsity long snapper.
The crew busts up again.
The spots, featured at joes.nfl.com, showcase other characters in the series, including the Machine, a stat-loving fan, as well as character blogs and a “mockumentary” on Joe Clifford.
A “series finale” is set to air during the Super Bowl in January.

  17. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the nfl, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  18. Washington Redskins is a good team,I like it.

  19. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  20. Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

  21. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  22. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  23. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Even so, I am sorry, because I do not subscribe to your whole suggestion, all be it exciting none the less. It seems to everybody that your remarks are not totally validated and in reality you are yourself not really fully certain of your point. In any event I did enjoy reading it.
