ABC, Affiliates Agree on Fast-Forward-Disabled VOD Content

Disney-ABC Television Group struck a deal with its affiliate association that lets ABC local stations sell local spots in ABC’s video-on-demand content, which is available in some cable systems with fast-forward functionality disabled.
ABC already has a deal in place with Cox Cable to offer prime-time content on VOD in some markets with fast-forward disabled. This new agreement brings ABC affiliates into that deal. Each affiliate can insert one local spot in each half-hour.
ABC said it will offer fewer commercials on VOD than in a live broadcast, but it has not determined how many.
ABC will provide programming to satellite, telco and land-line operators who agree to disable the “fast-forwarding” capability.
The deal also lifts ABC’s repurposing restrictions, allowing for expanded opportunities to repurpose network programming through the VOD arrangement and via download services such as iTunes and Xbox.
“We remain focused on our consumers and finding innovative ways to make our content more widely available to them, and we believe that this can be achieved by continuing to evolve the ways we work with our distribution and advertising partners,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney-ABC Television Group.

  1. And how soon will they be proposing to prevent cable and satellite providers from carrying any of the Disney-owned channels without disabling “fast-forward.”

  2. If it is one network, then it’s another network. That will prohibit fast-forward on dvr and dvd recorder’s.

  3. ABC WOULD TEAM UP WITH R.I.A.A. and file a lawsuit on PHILLIPS, SONY, DVD, DVR PRODUCT’S, since R.I.A.A. is sueing cable, satellite and internet. It’s all about recorded content commercial free and listening content. N.A.B. sure compliment’s ABC-DISNEY.

  4. Funny how I commented on this same thing a week and a half ago, in VOD v. Broadband section. Wow!

  5. Again, Broadcasters dislike choice to record live tv or get it V.O.D. If more broadcaster’s join ABC-DISNEY. Will see trouble, since David Rehr of N.A.B. is a hater to our DVR. My local KGET NBC CHANNEL 17 IS TICKED OFF WITH ME, SINCE I OWN A DVR ANOLOG FROM TIVO AND DVR BY DIRECTV IN DIGITAL HD. Selfish dang broadcasters. KGET 17 NBC PHONE IS 1-(661)-283-1700..

  6. IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY. BROADCASTER WANT FAST-FORWARD DISABLED, AND THEN ONCE THEY GET WHAT THEY WANT, I WILL HAVE TIME TO TAKE A LEAK. LOCAL BROADCASTER’S AND NATIONAL BROADCASTER’S WOULD BE HAPPY TO..
