CMT Shows Aim for Twang Appeal

Apr 6, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Pauly Shore and a major wrestling star are going country.
Viacom’s CMT is adding several new shows to its schedule that focus as much on the country music sensibility as they do on the music itself.
Mr. Shore will host a reality show.
CMT’s head of development, Bob Kusbit, said that while the deal with the professional wrestler hasn’t been signed, Hulk Hogan’s VH1 Show, “Hogan Knows Best,” drew good ratings in reruns on CMT.
CMT also is renewing “My Big Redneck Wedding” and “Gone Country,” and it’s hoping for a big boost this month from its CMT Music Awards and the launch of the competition show “Can You Duet” from the producers of “American Idol.”
Mr. Kusbit thinks he’s hit on a programming formula that works.
“The more we can put our viewers on the air, and the more they get to see themselves and people like them … the more they like it,” he said.
CMT plans to launch “CMT Paid Vacation With Pauly Shore,” a special that will serve as a back-door pilot for a series. In the show, a blue-collar family gets to take a luxury weeklong vacation, but Mr. Shore, best known for his Southern California stoner shtick, comes along with them. The program premieres April 26.
While Mr. Shore might not be an obvious choice for CMT, Mr. Kusbit said some of his movies, such as “Encino Man” and “Biodome,” have proved very popular with CMT viewers.
Similarly, Mr. Hogan, the wrestler, is a very popular figure with people who watch the channel. The network is getting into the home renovation genre in its own way with “Mobile Home Disaster.” In eight one-hour episodes, humble homes on wheels are transformed into trailer park palaces. The series premieres May 16.
Also in the CMT pipeline is a new series “Mabe in America,” featuring country comedian Tom Mabe in a hidden-camera show that will premiere in July.

  1. When I started my blog about a month ago, I wasn’t even aware this existed, but what a lesson! I screen every comment and I’m concerned about the amount of effort this will take if the volume increases substantially. When it’s not clear, I’ve googled the comment verbatim, and it normally shows up in dozens of other blogs’ posts. As you say, they’re typically generic comments with links to (sometimes bizarrely) unrelated sites. My personal favorite example so far was a glowing appraisal of my reasoning skills, which was submitted to a post of a picture of a monkey, and linked to a site discussing the dangers of lasik eye surgery.

  2. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  3. Wonderful to read!

  4. I mean, I could see all this fuss over the guy if he’d led Jersey to the Finals

  5. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
