Hot List: Jay McGraw

Jul 20, 2008  •  Post A Comment

After a number of best-selling books and network series, Jay McGraw has turned his attention to the syndication realm.
The executive producer of upcoming daytime strip “The Doctors” scored a deal with CBS Television Distribution last year to bring the medically driven series to stations for a fall launch.
“‘The Doctors’ is looking great right now,” said Mr. McGraw. “There have been unbelievably high expectations for this show, and so far everything we’ve accomplished has exceeded those expectations. We have a great staff on board, terrific talent and we are already signing exclusive stories right and left.”
The series features a team of five practicing medical professionals, investigating and discussing “hot-button” medical topics such as how to lose weight, what not to feed your child and why some vaccines can be dangerous. Mr. McGraw said “The Doctors” will aim to bust medical myths and answer burning questions viewers are too embarrassed or afraid to ask their own doctor.
The series is hosted by ER doctor Travis Stork (best known for his stint on “The Bachelor”). Other experts making the rounds are Dr. Lisa Masterson, an obstetrician/gynecologist; Dr. Andrew Ordon, a plastic surgeon; Dr. Tara Fields, a licensed marriage and family therapist; and Dr. Jim Sears, a pediatrician.
One resource that helped Mr. McGraw through the process was a longtime mentor—his father, Dr. Phil McGraw, whose “Dr. Phil” ranks as one of syndication’s top 10 shows.
“I’ve learned a lot about the business from my father, including a life lesson in that you are only as good as the team you’ve put together,” he said. “I’ve also learned a work ethic from him, in that the best standard you have to set is the one you put on yourself.”
Mr. McGraw, Carla Pennington and Dr. McGraw are executive producers for “The Doctors,” with Andrew Scher as co-executive producer and George Davilas and Jeff Hudson as supervising producers of the one-hour syndie daytime talk show, which bows Sept. 8.
Mr. McGraw is president and CEO of Stage 29 Productions, which was formed by his father. He previously was a producer for “Decision House,” which just ended its run on MyNetworkTV, as well as a number of “Dr. Phil” prime-time specials. He also appeared on “Renovate My Family,” which aired on Fox.
“For a young producer, Jay brings such a clear vision to every project he does,” said Terry Wood, president of creative affairs and development, CBS Television Distribution. “I know firsthand what it takes to launch a syndicated property, and I’m so impressed with his smarts, creativity, passion and his laser focus on delivering quality television.”
Mr. McGraw earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University and a B.S. in psychology at the University of Texas. He says he knew in school that TV was a calling he could not ignore.
Even with his attention on “The Doctors,” Mr. McGraw is formulating the next move in his producing career.
“Good ideas are first and foremost the key to making a good television show,” he said. “This next show I am really excited about and can become a good use of an hour of television. As I look ahead, I truly couldn’t be happier, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.”

  1. I would like to watch the show but can find no information on what TV station and/or what time (Pacific Time). I even emailed the Dr Phil show and asked what station and what time but got no reply.

  2. I apologize I gave you the wrong email address earlier. i just watch these show and my sister went to a dr from tv and had a horrible result and the doctor won’t give her the time of day. Your shows have to be more responsible as to who the let on. and I hope you do. Like I said you presently have a dr who had his medical license revoke in NY for good reason (i patient died in his OR) and doctors are allowed to go to other states to reinvent themselves. Broad certification is a start but background checks should be mandatory.
    Thank you.
I don’t think Jajn Adams will be on Oprah anytime soon.

  3. I applied to be on Jay’s Show “The Doctors” in July and was so excited when I was contacted. You asked for my pictures and I sent them and I even recieved a call from one of the producers. I haven’t heard back yet and now don’t know if I will be on your show. Seems like only people far away from me get to be on. I wanted to be a Extreme Makeover guest and was very excited, now it’s been a few months since the contact and the show has already began.
I am still a faithful watcher
    Hugs from NC

  4. Dr. Stork,
I have a granddaughter that is going through early
puberty and I saw the show Sept. 23, I was wondering if there is any way that I can get a copy of that information for my daughter?
She needs the help for her daughter and I could not remember all the information.
Would you please send me material.
I have enjoyed the show very much.
    Thank so very much.

  6. I have been watching your show for the past few weeks and really have been enjoying the knowledge that you present on health. Todays episode Nov.5th about the orgons ageing really hit home. I have a tyroid problem and have gained weight around the middle so i am concerned about my liver also. I am on thyroid medicine but never had a scan of thyroid only blood tests. I am 63 years old overweight and concerned because all you discussed today I have. I am border line diabetic and also have neuropathy in my one leg. I am on nine different medicines and my husband just had to go back to work so we can afford health insurance. My health has been put on the back burner because months we had no insurance. What exactly can I do to cleanse the liver and be sure my thyroid is ok. You mentioned seasonings but I need to know how to go about using them. I sell the Watkins products and am aware of cinnamon and how it works but again we need receipies on how to use the cleasing ones. Please help me I feel like my health has really gone down hill. My sym. are weight gain, tiredness, lack of energy and forgetting lots of things. I need to know what tests need done and what i can do to help myself. Thank you in advance and I really have enjoyed your show and telling people to watch the program. Hope it says on and replaces some of the shows that are not informative. Thanks Again Margie

  8. What was the name of the cellulite hand held device on the show that can be purchased for $60?
I also have never heard any of the doctors talk about why bowels can leak into your underwear. It seems to be worst when I walk alot. I have had a colonoscopy but did’t think to ask the doctor at the time. It was okay.

  9. This is one show my wife and I do NOT want to miss and try to watch it every day.
(I’m lucky in that I’m retired and can adjust my schedule).
    Very informative and entertaining!
Congratulations to all especially Jay Mcgraw.

  10. This program comes on in my area at 1:05am. One
morning I stumbled across this program and have
found it to be very very good and informative.
I now record it everyday. I also have began to
tell others that they need to watch this program.
The information you provide is extremely important for ALL. I hope it will eventually find
a better time slot in my area.

  11. How do I access information that has aired on past shows?
    Thank you

  12. Please contact me. I’ve tried e-mailing and I can’t get my message sent to your web site. If this should get through please call (931)788-6795. Emergency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Dear Docrors,
I am a 63 year old female. I have stage 4 ovarian cancer in my lungs, liver and small intestine. I don’t know how much longer I have to live. I was in the hospitl March and April for 63 days and wasn’t expected to make it out alive. I came home on hospice but after three weeks started chemo.
This is my third time with ovarian cancer. The first time I didn’t have ovaries, but i had 14 milignant tumors where the ovaries would have been. They removed 12 with surgery and two with chemo and I had a 2% chance of survival.
I also have Neurofibromatosis, Diabetes, Chrones Disease, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue,Syndrome,
Peptic Ulcer, Diverticulitis, Depression, Insominia, Goute, Restless Leg Syndrom and a few I can’t remember. Is there anything you can do to help me live a better life what time I have left?
I suffer 24/7. my legs are starting to give me trouble and I have trouble standing up for even a few minutes anymore.
I was wondering if the doctors on your show could look at my medical records and suggest maybe something the doctors here have misses. I have been a fighter and survivor all my life, but the constant pain and missery I’m in is starting to wear me down and I am starting towards leaning to giving up.
    Yours truely,

  14. What happened to the show for Jan 26 “The Vagina”
    We were all waiting!!!! Judi

  15. I was wondering if you have done a show on TMJ syndrome? I am suffering from this condition, and none of the typical treatments are working for me (to include splint therapy and surgery….I am facing major surgery—at a sum of $40-$50k…possibly out of pocket!). Proper treatment of this condition requires a highly trained specialist familiar with the TMJ and its function and how the bite is affected. I am at my wits end with this! Insurance doesn’t cover most treatments…only some surgical treatments are covered…even then, many are not. I understand that not just any surgeon can perform TMJ surgery, and that because of that, it is considered an “out of network” procedure as far as insurance carriers are concerened.
This is a condition that many people have, and are probably unaware of. I think it would be of interest to your viewers if you could do a program on this condition.
I have had a locked jaw for over a month now…can’t afford a $50k surgery, and am very frustrated! I would love to see a TMJ specialist/surgeon (Maybe Dr. Mark Piper from St. Petersburg, FL) on your show. I waited for many years to get treatment because of the out of pocket costs…I hate to see others go through what I am going through because they waited or didn’t know they had this condition.
Insurance companies discriminate against this joint! Maybe you could also go into why this is…if it were a toe joint, they would cover any treatment needed to fix it (surgery or otherwise), so why is the TMJ not covered?
I think this would be a very interesting topic for your show!

  16. Jay,
What became of the book I gave you to read and then pass on to your father…”GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT?” Remember the night you were at Border’s in Wynnewood, Pa when the Phila. Phillies were on their way to winning the World Series. It was all about teachers and students abused & bullied by administrators and how they suffer from PTSD after it.
    You PROMISED to respond me!
I am still waiting to hear from you and your dad!

  17. The “Docs” is now ny favorite show. Besides being informative– it is so entertaining because of the personalities and interactions of the doctors. Keep itcoming! Love you all Helen in Pittsburgh

  18. In the Friday show, The Doctors, it was
said that 8 ounces of OJ had over 200 kcal and 1 gm of fat. In reality it is
110 kcal & .32 gms of fat. Please get a
registered dietitian or a bone fide
    nutritionist as a consultant.

  19. 7664 Martinsville Hwy.Danville,Va.24541 I would like to talk to Dr.Drew Oru.Iwould like some surgeries done. Iwould like to make my ex-wished he’d never cheated.

  23. I watch it in the morning on CBS from nine until 10 central time. Hope this helps. SB

  24. I don’t get to watch the show because I am at work. But, I have an idea for a show. It would require a time commitment, but I think people would like to participate. Weight gain and loss is a big problem. I personally have a weight problem, but it isn’t as bad as some, worse than others. My idea is to have viewers commit to a weight loss program that the doctors recommend for each individual. Then have the viewers report back on their progress or lack there of. I think this would be a realistic way to help people lose weight, no ranch, no surgery just a reasonable diet and exercise plan that the average person can live with.Thhis may be ideal for people who need to lose 10-20 pounds or 50-75. Life changes that are easy to make but get results. I think it is a brilliant idea. You can thank me later.
Or, just have a show on how to lose my belly fat!

  25. I have been treated with various medication and mechanical equipment with very little results. I had a doppler Ultrasonography test which revealed that I have a venous leak. My concern is that once they insert the mechnical device it can result to infection and possible amputation. Can the venous leak be repaired and if so, what does that entail and where is it done.

  26. Can you get a cold from not wearing a jacket to go out in the cold to just let dogs out and in?

  27. what is the website for the docotors show—

  28. Carol, I don’t know if you are still alive, I have not heard from you in a great amount of time. My emails are not returned but, I dialed the number from this email and it was not in working order. I do not remember your sister’s name and I don’t remember what town Bob and Kelly live in.

  77. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
