Netflix to Stream in HD on Xbox

Netflix is making the jump to high definition with the soft launch of streaming HD titles on the Xbox 360.
On Nov. 19, Microsoft will roll out the Xbox Experience, an update to the Xbox 360’s control panel that also offers the ability to stream 300 titles in high definition through Netflix.
Steve Swasey, Netflix’s VP of corporate communications, said the launch is “underwhelming” in regards to the rest of the content Netflix provides, including 12,000 titles that can be streamed instantly in standard definition.
“Hi-def is part of our future,” he said. “We just don’t know when or how much.”
He suggested considering the Xbox 360 move not necessarily a full-fledged launch, but a “stake in the ground” toward streaming HD content.
While the Xbox 360 will become the first partner with Netflix to receive high-definition streaming, Mr. Swasey said other partner devices, like TiVo, Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players, or LG Electronics’ BD300 Network Blu-ray disc player, will receive HD content “at some point.”
Specifically not included in the list is the option to stream HD content through a PC or Mac. Mr. Swasey said that is not currently a part of Netflix’s development.
Mr. Swasey stressed that in order for the HD content to look crisp and clean, a high-speed connection is needed for playback.
