LG, Netflix Partner to Stream Content Direct to TV Sets

Jan 8, 2009  •  Post A Comment

LG Electronics and Netflix on Monday announced a partnership to provide streaming video content for broadband-enabled high-definition television sets, making LG sets the first to stream Netflix content without a separate external device. The sets were unveiled during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
LG Electronics expects to have broadband HDTVs available to the market by spring, and Netflix subscribers will be able to stream movies, television programs and high-definition content via the television, the companies said in a statement.
The sets, 47- and 42-inch LH50 LCD models and 60- and 50-inch PS80 plasma models, include what LG Electronics is terming “NetCast Entertainment Access.”
“Embedding the Netflix streaming software in the television is a natural progression of our partnership with Netflix and our innovative product line,” said LG Electronics USA President Teddy Hwang. “This is an LG industry first, which provides another flexible option for consumers seeking to access exciting content directly through their HDTV.”
“LG Electronics was first to embrace Netflix as a streaming partner a year ago, and was first in 2008 to introduce a Blu-ray disc player that streams movies from Netflix,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. “So it’s fitting that LG is the first to introduce Netflix instant streaming directly to the TV with these next-generation HDTVs.”
Netflix currently streams in high definition across multiple platforms, including the Xbox 360 and LG Electronics’ BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player. The service does not currently stream in high definition on PCs or Macs.
LG also announced other partnerships for its broadband-capable HDTVs, including YouTube and the Yahoo! Widget engine, which will allow users to get news, weather and access to their Flickr accounts via their television set. The television also will be able to sync up with a home network, allowing users to play MP3s and present slide shows on their HDTV screen.
“LG’s new NetCast Entertainment Access capability broadens the user experience to include not only entertainment content, but also up-to-the-minute news, stock information, weather updates, photo management and more by simply using the TV’s remote control,” Peter Reiner, senior VP of marketing and strategy for LG Electronics USA, said in a statement. “With these and future content relationships, LG continues to break the mold with innovative technologies designed to enhance consumers’ viewing experience.”
Following LG Electronics’ announcement, Vizio on Wednesday became the second HDTV provider to team with Netflix for direct streaming of content to an HD set.
“Today’s consumer demands more than just anytime, anywhere, access to content. They also crave variety, especially when it comes to entertainment, and it needs to be just as convenient as changing the channel,” said Vizio VP Matthew McRae. “That’s why we’re so excited to be working with Netflix as one of our key content partners on Vizio’s ‘Connected HDTV’ Platform to deliver unprecedented choice, control and convenience for HDTV viewers.”
