ABC Gives ‘Life on Mars’ a Finale

Mar 2, 2009  •  Post A Comment

ABC is giving fans of “Life on Mars” some closure.
The network has told producers that it won’t be ordering any additional episodes beyond the 17 currently in the works for this season. But rather than play the usual “Let’s-wait-until-May-before-we-make-a-decision” game regarding the fate of “Mars,” ABC brass have admitted to producers that they won’t be ordering another season of the show.
That means that, rather than letting “Mars” drift away with no resolution, producers will be able to write and film a definitive ending to the saga. Production is expected to continue for at least a few more weeks, with the finale expected to air no later than early April.
“We felt it was the right thing to do for the producers and the fans and creatively,” ABC Entertainment Group President Steve McPherson told TelevisionWeek.
ABC took heat from critics and loyal fans for the abrupt endings to its well-regarded dramas “Eli Stone” and “Dirty Sexy Money” last year. By giving “Mars” a chance to complete its mission, the network is hoping to avoid any similar “controversy.”
What’s more, the U.S. “Mars” now will end up more closely resembling its British predecessor, which lasted for 16 episodes and also was a close-ended series. While the British series spawned a sequel of sorts, dubbed “Ashes to Ashes,” no such plans are in the works Stateside.
Ensuring a definitive ending for “Mars” might also make it easier to promote the show’s 17-episode run as a DVD release or, possibly, on a cable network should the series land an off-net run.
Mr. McPherson admitted the ratings for “Mars” were the main reason behind the decision to convert the show from a regular series into, in essence, a close-ended “event.”
He has no regrets with how “Mars” is going out, however.
“I look at it creatively, and I couldn’t be prouder,” he said.
Jason O’Mara stars in “Mars.” Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg are among the executive producers of the project, which is produced by 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios in association with Kudos.

  1. Proof that well-written sci-fi, in any stretch of the term (and yes, it is a sci-fi series), is still always the first to go while cheap, “reality” pablum continues to rule lineups. But at least Life on Mars will get a proper finale. Unlike Pushing Daisies.

  2. It is true already that fox does not want scripted shows for my network tv anymore and is going into reality series but it would be nice to save Pushing Daisis, Eli Stone, and Dirty Sexy Money and place them on My Network TV. it is worth the risk. it will bring the network to more than 1.0 average rating. These are good shows and ABC has not been seeing into the future. Jericho might come back on the CW and I think Serenity wold be great on My network TV. These shows can work out great ratings and they ave followers. More than a million. Helloooooo.

  3. I’ll miss Life on Mars. Does ABC really think programs like Cupid, Better Off Ted, and The Unusuals will do better in the ratings? They’d probably have better luck bring back Bob Patterson. Doh!

  4. Elvyn: Seriously? I’m going to take a wild guess and assume you’re simply a fan of these shows (which I am too), and you don’t work in the industry. These shows are expensive to produce and a 1.0 rating on MNTV is not going to produce any type of profit. This is why MNTV is going to an all repeats/movies/WWE model. If MNTV cannot make money on cheap fare like “Jail” do you really think they can make money on an expensive 1 hour drama? Jericho, another show I loved, is not coming back with NEW episodes. CW is showing repeats and that’s all there is to it. And Serenity? Come on – that is long gone. TV is a business. The networks have to make money. If people don’t watch quality shows (every single one I’ve discussed is quality) they will be canceled. If people watch reality, those will survive. The Bachelor as seen a HUGE jump in ratings. People are watching it. Whether you agree with it or not, that’s what’s going to be on the air – the shows people watch.

  5. I can’t believe this. I had heard it was one of the highest rated shows of the season and Jason O’Mara the breakout star. I worked background on 2 episodes and had a great time. Everyone is so nice and friendly. No big egos on this show. I wish everyone associated with the show the best of luck

  6. Sad – very sad, another good one bites the dust. It is such a good show – ABC needs to get a clue.

  7. Carolyn – The clue is “money” The show loses money. It’s canceled. Simple.

  8. Actually, Carolyn, ABC has a clue: It can’t make money on shows that routinely draw only 5 million viewers (down from 11 million at premiere – ouch).
MNTV would kill for a show with 5 million viewers, of course – but it can’t make money, either, when that show costs $1.5 to $2 million per episode to produce.
Whether it’s Mars or Daisies or whatever: It all comes down to the numbers. Them’s the rules; the producers know ’em going in.

  9. NOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo………. :^(
    Bite me, ABC!

  10. What part of “majority rule” don’t you understand, fanboi morons?

  11. Friday Night Lights on NBC is currently in it’s 3rd season on NBC, surviving with similar viewer numbers to Life On Mars due to a strong fan-base. NBC had faith in that series and found ways to make it profitable enough for them to continue on the air through innovative ideas & thinking.
It will be most interesting to see if “Lights” gets a fourth season nod come May.
Mars“? ABC? Well, they just cancel it.

  12. The good news is the network’s recognition that closure is an important part of ancillary sales. I would take it a step further, and say that it is important for the future of all Network dramatic projects. An important emerging factor in episodic drama has been the over-arching story line, which–in a number of series–has replaced the individual episode as the prime dramatic element. Even procedurals, which may be the most immune to this trend, have morphed in this direction. I believe the routine cancellation of shows in the middle of those story arcs is eroding viewers general willingness to invest themselves in a story. Why get involved with trying to understand the forces behind Journey Man’s time travel if the odds are good to great that you’ll never get to the secret? Good for ABC that they are allowing a proper close. Hopefully, it will not be an isolated case, as I think the trend toward a powerful over-arching story line has been a very good one.

  13. Applaud the ‘closure’ aspect of ABC’s decision on ‘Life With Mars‘. Yes. Thank you.
Most likely makes the 1 season series more appetizing to people on the dvd sales side of the network too.

  14. I am getting so disgusted with network tv. Every time I get into a show it gets canceled. What does network tv have against well written, well acted shows? Not all of us want reality tv 24/7. I am about to give up on ABC.

  15. Love this show and hate to see it go and what I have to say next will probably stir up a few people but here goes…. If production costs are so high, then everybody needs to take a pay cut so things can get back in line and affordable. There is no need for actors to be making the astonomical money they are. I blame it on all the unions involved and the studio heads for being so greedy. How many damn houses does one need anyhow? Network tv is getting pathetic and only has themselves to blame for low ratings.

  16. This is one of the best written, acted and directed shows on television so, naturally, they’re cancelling it.
Maybe a fan uprising will keep it alive for one more season, it might be tough to go longer than that anyway given the demand for this cast in other projects.

  17. Well, at least Life on Mars will have a closer. I suspected this show was going the way of the dodo bird. I watch this show and tape the others. Going in on another ABC show that gets canceled is becoming a hazard for scripted shows. I hate the Bachelor, Idol, Dancing with the Z-listed Stars, Survivor, anything reality based at this point as I am a writer and I feel for those writers who lose out on scripted shows being replaced by the cheap stuff. When Jay Leno starts his show, NBC will effectively kill that hour block of scripted shows and thus displacing so many working class people out of a job. Way to go global economic disaster and network weasels.

  18. I feel different than most on this one. FINALLY, a network gets it right. I too love the show, but would much rather them finish it like this than pull the plug with a cliff hanger. Fox did it with Invasion and a couple of others that were really good. CBS did it with Moonlight that was also great. They almost gave it an ending, but it looked like a last minute thing with little thought, but not a real resolution. And now for the big one, LOST. They could have skipped over the last two years and picked up with this one. It has finally started explaining a few things. They also plan to end it at the end of next season, I think, May 2010. This is really the way to a series. Some should only last a year or two or three…

  19. “Majority rules?” Then I suppose we are DOOMED to watching “The Bachellor” and “Howie Do It” forever forward. Thank God for HBO.

  20. HBO???? Where are you, 2004?
And why would that poster think Fox is no longer doing scripted programming?
And why would anyone renew the money-losing, audience repellent known as Friday Night Lights? Clueless.

  21. I wish that NBC would have done the same thing for “Invasion” a couple of years ago. I really liked that series, but it was canceled after just one season, leaving viewers like me hanging.

  22. Oops, I meant ABC…not NBC…canceling “Invasion”.

  23. Sorry to hear that Life on Mars is going off but sometimes ideas aren’t meant to last indefinitely. Sure hope they write a proper conclusion and don’t just let it hang.

  24. I’m of two minds (at least) about this.
Yes, it is in some sense good that the writers will be able to script a finale and wrap up the concept.
On the other hand, if they do this it makes the odds of a resurrection on A&E vanishingly remote.
On the third hand (aren’t there always at least three?) – The BBC LOM series wrapped up and they’re coming back with a sequel whose name I’ve forgot. Something like Ashes to Ashes?
All I can say is: Fans of Life on Mars – WATCH THE THING ON THE ABC WEB SITE! (Over and over again, perhaps).
Assuming you’re not a Nielsen family, watching it on abc.com is the only way you can let the High Sheriffs at ABC know that you like the show.

  25. This is terrible. I loved this show so much last fall that I reviewed it for a political site, Mayor Sam. But it never got the hang of it: one reason Lost is so great, also about time travel, is because of FEAR. Bad things happen. No one knew what would happen next.
If something like this happens to you, there would always be an undercurrent of fear. Instead, some episodes have people committing suicide and the cops laughing, the Keystone cops in the swimming pool, and groovy music. He had a car, a job, a girlfriend. No problems.
And the writing was very uneven. Sometimes the dialogue was so long the actors had to take a breath in the middle of it. And they really enjoyed preaching: homophobia is so bad, did you know that?
Still, I watched every episode at least 3 times! Wah.

  26. OH NOOOOO….you are canceling a well done series? Shame on you ABC…this was a entertaining, well acted, refreshing series and I planned my Wednesday’s around it’s time slot.
    This really sucks…..

  27. last year it was “moonlight” and this year it’s “life on mars.” it’s getting to the point where i’m afraid to watch a new show and get attached. i simply don’t understand the obsession with reality shows. they have nothing to do with reality. give me a well written scripted show any day. at least abc is not being cruel the way cbs was when they cancelled “moonlight.” at least “mars” will get a proper ending, but man, i’m going to miss it!

  28. ABC and the other broadcast networks are slowly but methodically marching toward extinction. Increasingly, there is no discernible difference between a “major network” show and any number of cable and independent offerings. Perhaps the only place a qualitative distinction exists in in news, which the broadcast networks are slowly abandoning.
Short sightedness has always been the television industry’s plague. As Grant Tinker, the last great broadcast executive, should have taught the industry years ago, sometimes the long view is the most successful. Hill Street Blues and Cheers would never survive their rocky starts if they were launched today.
It will be interesting to see what replaces “Mars” on ABC. I’m betting some kind of cheap reality crap, which will continue to be the rage until it burns out, as such gimmickry always does.
Yes, television is in the business of making money. But sometimes it takes time, patience and investment to make money. If the broadcast industry had brighter leaders, and even worker bees, it would understand that.

  29. Someone must have pennied shut the doors to the minds of the ABC Executives responsible for cancelling Life on Mars. The symptoms for that and oxygen deprivation are the same. TV shows featuring SSC (Style, Substance, and Character) get cancelled in favor of mindless reality shows with T & A and scripted oily hot tub scenes. Take a look at a good show like the Sopranos. It ran for years developing the characters and the storyline, and when it was time, the Execs let it reach the finish line with everyone cheering and celebrating its existence. Come on, ABC, you just shot the legs out under Life on Mars before it even made it out of the starting blocks. And then in the same dying breath of the cancellation news, you announce a two new cop shows called Castle and The Unusuals. I won’t be watching either of them, because I don’t want to get hooked on yet another future cancellation.

  30. It’s a shame that the series didn’t take off. At times, the writing and story lines were more than a bit uneven and ‘quirky’, even for a sci-fi based program. ‘Glad to know that the series will have closure; it will be interesting to see how it all ends. (Hopefully, happily for Sam and Annie!)

  31. I am so disspointed in you ABC! Life On Mars is a fantastic show! Please consider bringing it back!!!!!!!!!!

  32. ABC! Why are you followers? Is it really so difficult to maintain an intelligent show and entertain the audience? Every time an edgy show comes on the air with defined characters and intriguing plots, the show is pulled. can’t you for once stand by a quality piece of writing and production. SAD!

  33. I’m not suprised but I am terribly upset by the cancellation of LOM. It’s one of the only decent shows on these days. I’m just glad we aren’t going to be left hanging as to why Sam was in 1973.

  34. ah hell. cancellation is a big disappointment. mars has the ability to be quirky and very touching at the same time. one of the few shows i looked forward to each week. how much longer can friday night lights survive?

  35. The Scifi channel should by this show. What a great, entertaining, intelligent show. just like Pushing Daisies. Their cancellations say more about the typical TV viewing audience than the networks. The networks have to make money, but they could give a well done show at least 2 seasons to catch on. Sienfeld didn’t do well the first year either.

  36. Where is HBO when you need them? This series cant die like this. HBO lost The Sopranos and Deadwood. This is a perfect opportunity for HBO to pick up this series and run with it. It is a shame to have such a wonderful show go away so fast. How about TBS or CBS come on. Some one save this great Show.

  37. Another great series is discontinued. There are a few good shows on during the week, why didn’t you just move the time slot. It’s up against CSI:NY and Law & Order. You have an excellent cast and creative scripts. Did you hire NBC programming executives.

  38. Another nail in the coffin for “network programming.” Perhaps network heads are getting paid off by cable honchos. I’d rather chew off my own arm than watch what network TV will be by the fall. Great shows on USA, A&E, F/X, plus premium channels. “Free” TV – turning into complete garbage at break-neck speed.

  39. This country is doomed.

  40. This is the breakout show and it’s pending finale summons mundane television. There is an innocent quality to this show. However, it examines law and order in a historical perspective while analyzing human character and the evolution of new idseas and paradigms.
The acting is sharp and each actor brings a thoroughness and integrity to the role. Can this go to a different channel for a future life? Can this show be seen in reruns?
Life on Earth needs this show now!
    Thank you.

  41. But you have to pay for it…
Here in the UK, the BBC has many tv and radio channels on which quality is paramount, even if for minority audiences.
One effect of this is that the commercial channels (sponsors, and all that rubbish, don’tcha know) are kept on their toes and have to compete, not just for numbers, but for kudos!
Of course, we pay a licence fee, but imagine what life would be like in the US if the PBS channels had masses of money to spend on quality programmes.
    s.

  42. I cannot believe that Life on Mars is being cancelled. I could not believe that October Road was cancelled. Dirty Sexy Money another great show. I know plenty of people that view these shows and we are so disappointed. Perhaps there should be a network that continues with these types of shows because there is a hugh fan base. I cannot believe that the reality shows are cancelling great programs like these. What a horror. Go to a cable network and see a rapper having 25 girls fight over him. Yeah great programing. BRING BACK OUR SHOWS PLEASE.

  43. I, sadly, can totally believe Life on Mars got cancelled, that’s the way it works on TV. If the Bachelor is getting huge ratings then the networks are going to stay with that. However I hope it won’t be long before they realize where all their non-reality TV viewers went – they are all watching shows on-line. Personally I can wait 24 hours to watch a show on Hulu (which is a fantastically well designed site, especially compared to any of the ones belonging to the networks) if it gets me away from the 20 minutes of commercials for drugs I don’t need, cars I don’t want and beer I don’t like. I would be happy to watch the shows on the network sites too – though, as the Jericho debacle showed, the networks don’t count the online viewers for some reason.

  44. I can’t believe they are canceling my favorite show?? Why? Why? So you can produce more reality shows for those with low intelligence, that will vegetate and consume Cheeseballs!! Shows like the Bachelor, Wife Swamp, Supper Nanny, now those are real interesting trailer trash shows. ABC executives are making more viewers of cable network shows, what are you thinking..!! I am so disappointed..Shame on you!!!

  45. I believe this is the straw that will break this particular camel’s back. I’m done with network TV. It appears there is just no market for smart, well-done scripted series anymore. So the reality idiots can have the airwaves … I’m done with ’em.

  46. Kathleen is right we do need this show – it has been fun remembering what I did not know in 1973. There goes Thursday mornings around the “water cooler”.

  47. I am going to quit watching any network tv until it’s in its second season. Let me see, October Road, Traveler, Eli Stone and now this. Thanks ABC…you really know how to reel us in.

  48. I HATE TO SEE MARS GO AWAY, BECAUSE ANYTIME I REALLY LIKE A SHOW IT GETS CANCELLED.
WHATS NOT TO LIKE ABOUT MARS. THE PREMISE IS NEW, AND THE ACTORS ARE EXCEPTIONAL. THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO GO WITH THE SHOW. I WISH THEY WOULD RECONSIDER THIER DECISION TO CANCEL THE SHOW. I’M GONNA MISS IT. I,M NOT A FAN OF REALITY T.V., SO I HOPE THEY DON’T REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER REALITY PROGRAM.

  49. ABC…you are the worst! You used to be the best, now,no network is worth watching except maybe Showtime and HBO. Life on Mars was the best! You blew it. Now I won’t even tune in to watch Greys Anatomy, because it sucks too. Let’s face it, ABC…YOU SUCK!!!! I’m so disappointed in you.

  50. Well what i think for the ABC brass and like all the other tv stations brass should stop the neilson rating system crap of what tv programs should get the boot or not but start some type of viwers website for voteing on tv program as to what the viwers think of them and as for me life on mars was a great tv program and b4 it it was ugly betty and grey’s anatomy but sence abc has been changeing the program times each week i no longer watch grey’s anatomy and if abc keep up the crap of changeing the program times of like 7to8 to like 7:01 or 02 to 8:00 or 8:01 it will put me right back to was not watching abc because abc had no good program worth watching.

  51. ABC tends to cancel shows that involves thinking.

  52. I can’t believe Life on Mars is being given the axe. It’s one of the best shows on TV these days. Harvey Kietel in a kimono was priceless! I almost wet my pants laughing.

  53. I do understand that everything is about money, but LIFE ON MARS was so fresh the network had to understand it would take a little time to catch on. It would be nice if we could keep something other than reality shows. At the end of Boston Legal the question was asked what shows are out there for the adults of this country. I guess Life On Mars was my answer but not the rest of the country’s.

  54. HBO totally needs to pick this show up. It would be alot more edgier if it was on their network. Showtime would also be an option. I love this show. At least their giving time to wrap up the ending.

  55. Man, I love this show. I can’t believe it’s biting the dust so quickly. I echo all the previous comments. Totally hate most of these “reality” shows. I think a possible solution would be to create a subscription channel just like HBO, Showtime, etc., but for this type of genre, that way maybe the subscriptions would cover some of the productions costs? Just wondering… I’d pay for it…

  56. I really enjoyed LOM but I’m not too broken up that’s its getting the axe because the premise would have worn thin with me soon enough. The over-arching storyline with a definite close date is great for viewers like me who don’t want to invest into a show’s backstory even though I was there from the beginning, LOM is a very good, very underrated show but dem’s the breaks in a number-driven society such as ours.
I’ll be watching to see if Sam makes it back home and hopefully Lisa Bonet makes another appearance before the show ends.
PS. Jason O’Mara’s going to be a star.

  57. I love this show & will miss it. I DVR it every week so I can watch while I put my baby to sleep & skip the commercials. Do ratings take into account those who DVR it?

  58. i am finding it harder to watch t.v. these days unless the show is on a cable station. abc nbc cbs are afraid to take chances or stick with shows. 2 examples eli stone,a fantastic show ,with imagination.life on mars another show which has you thinking, its ok to think out of the box.what do we want more reality shows they suck, enough of the garbage you have got planned ,try new ideas ,thats why hbo and other cable programs ,do well.entourage a show which thinks out of the box, just a word of advice to abc nbc cbs, start changing your ways or you wont have any body watching your stations

  59. Please please please save Life On Mars! Most network shows suck now,the sitcoms are not funny and reality shows are the biggest pieces of crap on tv.ABC finally puts on a good show and they cancel it.Why not try it in a different time slot?My whole family watches it every week, even my wife who can’t stand any new tv shows loves this one. Please let another network have the brains to pick up this show.I dont know whats going on over at Disney Co. the Disney channel is horrible, their movies blow(except the ones with Pixar) and ABC is a terrible network. If Walt Disney was alive he would fire all these morons who are running his company into the ground and hire people with actual vision and talent.

  60. keep Life on Mars on the air, it’s a great show.

  61. keep Life on Mars on the air, it’s a great show.

  62. Amazing…!!! My wife just told me that ” Life on Mars ” is getting cancelled. Not a shocker….That is because of all the stupid, braindead idiots that cannot wait to see who the bachelor picks is what drives todays TV ratings and the $$. Get a friggin’ life!! I know that if my ” Dancing with the Stars favorite does not win – I will not be able to wake up in the morning .
Once again a really well written show that has great actors and personality will take the hit.
ABC – think again and take a chance on a really good show before you sign on for another year of friggin ” Wife Swap “!!

  63. Having lived and worked in the Seventies the writers of Life on Mars have hit the mark. I stumbled on the show early on and was hooked. Confusion over the title kept some of my friends away until I got them to watch one episode and they were hooked too. Any possibility of reconsidering the fate of Life on Mars? The show cancelation is creating quite a stir on Facebook.

  64. Sad to see this show go. I heard season finale my wife heard show finale. I can’t believe another good show bites the dust. I’m sure if it was making good money they would keep it. I’ve watched some of my favorite shows end without warning such as invasion and the 4400. My Battlestar Galatika is ending early also because of low viewership. For those of you that haven’t seen that it is probably the best written shown I’ve ever seen on TV.
Agree with the first poster. Anything SciFi just doesn’t seem to last. Those of us that like shows with some thought must be an ever increasing minority group

  65. ABC are you listening? I understand budget concerns, but almost everyone here is horrified over this cancelation. I didn’t even know about it until tonight when the announcer said “series finale”! I am just as horrified. All of the shows on ABC that I have enjoyed the last few years have been canceled.
I agree with the posters that the “thinking” shows are the ones getting the axe. Yet NBC’s “Frasier,” the least likely Cheers spinoff was a thinking show, and delightfully condescending at points and was one of the most successful shows ever produced. My recommendation is picking Life On Mars back up.
A further observation: we don’t need constant over-sexualization to enjoy a show. Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money finally both were getting too dirty for me. Give us more shows that give us heart and mind (like Life on Mars).
Lastly, whenever I missed the show on TV, I would tune-in online. Count your online viewers – that is a big convenience to a lot of people.

  66. Agree with the first poster. Anything SciFi just doesn’t seem to last. Those of us that like shows with some thought must be an ever increasing minority group

  67. My wife and I couldn’t believe it when we heard the announcement of the upcoming “series finale” of LOM. ABC hasn’t any patience for intelligent programs. But then their programming (as in scheduling) betrays their lack of intelligent programmers as well. While it might seem a quaint notion, consistency is the path to building audience. Get it? Meanwhile, ABC should know that LOM fans now have one more reason to tune out ABC and move to HBO and Showtime.

  68. I am so upset Life on Mars is being canceled. My husband and I have become loyal viewers every Wednesday night at 10:00 PM. ABC should be ashamed of themselves. They are losing this loyal viewer of many years. The show is well produced and the actors are very talented. This is ABC’s loss. I sincerely hope another network will pick the show up and make fresh episodes. This loyal viewer will follow LOM wherever it may go.

  69. I can’t beleive LOM is being cancelled!!!! It’s a great show. It’s entertaining and it makes you think. ABC, how could you do this again. You cancelled ELI STONE, BIG SHOT and now, LIFE ON MARS. This is the only show I watch on ABC since you cancelled ELI AND BIG SHOT. I HOPE, another network picks this one up.

  70. I guess ABC doesn’t want anyone watching anything but trailer trash un-real reality shows. I loved Life on Mars, the music & cars were great to see and Jason O’Mara is hot! I guess i’ll be in even better shape since I won’t be watching tv on Wed nights now either. There are no good shows left in my opinion. Even Grey’s is getting boring. Dirty Sexy Money was a fun show & so was Pushing Daisies. really who is keeping track of the viewers & what viewers are they tracking. Apparently none of us here!

  71. I love this show!!! Great storyline/actors!
I hate to see this show cancelled. With all the reality shows now, this was like a breath of fresh air.

  72. Same network that moronically cancelled BOSTON LEGAL & PUSHING DAISIES.
I am now boycotting all ABC shows. LIFE ON MARS IS FANTASTIC!

  73. ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! I freakin loved this show. I am so disappointed!!!!!!! How it can’t be making money is a surprise to me, especially after reading all of these posts!

  74. This is the best show on air. I am just sick that my favorite show is being cancelled. This unique show had great writers and actors. I love the soundtracks. Please, ABC, reconsider cancelling this brilliant program.

  75. I really love Life on Mars. It is so witty and I never knew what to expect next.
At least we get a finale that will tie up loose ends. Hope it lives up to the rest of the episodes.
Bye LOM. You will be missed :*(

  76. It’s an April Fool’s joke.
    They aren’t cancelling LOM.
    Are, they?!?!
    total bs

  77. It’s an April Fool’s joke.
    They aren’t cancelling LOM.
    Are, they?!?!
    total bs

  78. Damn! I have not missed an episode and bought them all on itunes. So well written and clever and immensely entertaining. It was the one thing we sat down for every week. I’m so sad about this.
Then there’s Jason O’Mara. Jeez, is he a doll or what?
    Bummed!

  79. We were so disappointed to hear LOM is being cancelled. We grew up in New York in the 70’s and this show hits home. It gives us a blast from the past that sometimes people need to remember. We love this show and wish ABC would reconsider. In today’s troubling world, it’s good to have a show that can let your imagination run wild, unlike some of the demeaning reality shows like Bachelor (who make men/women) seem desparate for love & that 9 out of 10 times don’t work out. Now I just found out that Eli Stone has been cancelled? WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON? WHY ARE ALL THE GREAT SHOWS BEING CANCELLED? ABC if you think you’re ratings have gone done on this show, wait till you begin a new series. You probably won’t even get 5 million viewers because we are all too fearful of getting involved in something that will just abruptly end. There’s not too many shows that both my husband and I watch together, but LOM and Eli Stone were the two we always looked forward to sitting down and enjoying with each other. ABC you have destroyed us.

  80. I am so unhappy that this series is cancelled. I love this show. I rarely watch anything on network TV because I’m sick of ridiculous reality shows. For the most part network TV is so awful. I guess I should smack my head with a brick so I can enjoy the other programs they’re running.

  81. I can’t believe they’re cancelling Life on Mars. That is, hands down, the best show on right now. I guess dumb reality shows will always win, even over Jason O’Mara,Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli all in the same show. What a shame. The music wasn’t so bad either.

  82. Well written, Arlene. I love this show, it is our family night favorite. Supurb writting and acting. Put LOM in the Bachelor/Bachelorette spot. That show sure went into the sewer. Why does this excellent show get cancelled?

  83. I am so ticked off that you cancelled Life on Mars. I would look forward to Wed nights watching Lost and Life on Mars with my wife, we would plan our whole week just to make sure we could watch these two shows. After Lost is over I will not watch ABC anymore, and like a lot of people I will not bother to watch Castle or the Unusuals just to be dissaspointed when they cancel them too. I guess it’s back to watching CSI atleast I know they will still be on for a ong time. Bye ABC!!!!!

  84. Can’t take this anymore. Finally there was a show worth watching, great writng, different type of storyline, the music, the memories of the 70’s and they cancel it after one season. Oh they can keep Scrubs after it was cancel in the other network. But the best show in years gets the boot.I guess dumb and stupid are running the network now. No wonder I rarely watch televison any more, and that’s a blessing because as a consumer I have the power of the remote control. So I can cancel ABC !!!

  85. Do not again cancel a high quality, smart show. this show has a devoted if, as yet, small following, which could get larger if allowed to continue. It’s so aggravating to see this high calibur show bite the dust.

  86. its a great, well written ,well acted show..BRING IT BACK!!!!!!

  87. I CAN’T believe this show is getting cancelled. I agree with all of you, this is a quality show. It was the ONLY show on ABC that I could actually sit through and enjoy! Well, ABC just lost another viewer, ME!!

  88. I love Life on Mars. Everytime I love a show it gets cancelled. It is the best show I have seen on tv in a long time. I was actually brought to tears when I heard it was cancelled. I looked forward to Wednesday night. I hop another network picks it up. GREAT SHOW

  89. Life on Mars was the best show I have seen on TV in a long time. I am very upset that it is being cancelled. How can ABC do this? I actually looked forward to Wednesday night to watch it.

  90. I really enjoyed Life On Mars. My wife is so pissed at ABC for taking it away from her. She really enjoyed it. I got into the show because of my wife and have really enjoyed it. Cant something be done to keep it on even on another network. So sick of reality shows. Great actors on Life onMars.

  91. I can’t believe you are canceling this show. My two teenage sons and I love to watch it every week. Explain to me how you can take off “Life on Mars” and keep “Lost” on. I think ABC is lost to what the viewers really like.

  92. WHAT A GREAT SHOW! I HAVENT SAT IN AND WAITED FOR A TV SHOW SINCE THE DUKES OF HAZZARD!! TOO BAD FOR US WHO ENJOY A TRIP BACK IN TIME EVEN IF ITS ONLY FOR AN HOUR ON A WED! HOPE IT COMES BACK

  93. The show is great. Great acting, great writing, great music and the characters all seem to blend and mix very well.
It has been a long time since a show was funny, serious and mysterious.
Hate to see it go because everyone involved in the show made it great to watch.

  94. Bring back Life On Mars !!!!!

  95. Life On Mars!!! One of the best shows I have seen in years, No one knew about it because it had a crap time slot. They should have moved Scrubs out. What a big mistake by this network.

  96. Just when I start watching A.B.C again they go the way of A.I.G. The top brass must all be arrogant ass- holes worried about the all mighty dollar instead of the viewers. The show should be moved to a better time slot and given at least another season. Boomers have the means to T-VO the shows they like. I will no longer be watching A.B.C. (Awfully Bad Company.)

  97. Just like ABC to cancel an Original show…this is why I prefer to watch other stations that aren’t afraid of being different. Reality shows are ruled by people who prefer to what others wallow in their own shame, the type of people who usually don’t pick up a good book every once in a while just to stimulate the imagination.

  98. I loved Life on Mars. I’m so upset with the station now. They cancel everything. What’s the point in watching TV anymore? If it’s good they will put it out on DVD and I can watch it on my own time. I’m sick of wasting time with the station anymore. Anything I like gets cancelled. Let’s put on more mindless tv like all the reality crap that’s on now. I want to see shows that I can’t wait for next week to see what happens. I’m done with tv.

  99. This was one of my favorite new shows, and I
will truly miss it. Shame on the network for
    not giving it a chance.

  100. Well, this is officially the last ABC show I will watch. I’ve gotten tired of watching a new show only to have the rug pulled out from underneath me. I just went through my tivo, and Life on Mars was the only show. Now that it’s gone, so is ABC.

  101. It’s a shame. It was well written, funny and never took itself too seriously. The cast was great. Music was awesome. Sometimes you need to give a show a chance to establish an audience – like with Cheers and Hill Street Blues. Even Seinfeld took a year to get off the ground. The last thing you would want is an original show rather than the same old stuff you see all the time. Network TV is well on its way to a slow death. Soon ABC will be on the bail out plan…good luck!

  102. My husband and I are astounded at the lack of intelligence at ABC. Once more it’s about money and not what people want/like. I agree, a better time slot could have made a difference. But, as a ‘baby boomer’ – remember, one of the largest TV audiences, I can say that the show had a great combination of life in the 70’s with a twist of today. The music was great, the scripts well thought out and it kept you wanting more. Maybe ABC, like so many other businesses, should start developing a ‘Viability Plan’ for an eventual government bailout. After reading the comments of so many disappointed, and frankly pissed off viewers, they may be facing more money problems than they thought they had by viewing Life on Mars. Again, what a mistake.

  103. This is one of the best shows out there right now. I can’t believe how quickly you guys give up. Isn’t your job to innovate and bring new things to the viewer? Give it more time – most things that are worthwhile are not accepted by the masses right away. Looks like a Slumdog Millionare for another network. Guess you can fill the timeslot with another What would you -do? – I know — Stop watching ABC

  104. I am SO disappointed that Life on Mars will be over! It is unique and interesting. Please bring it back!!!!

  105. Why the hell would they cancel such a good show. I call for a boycott of all 4 networks. HERE HERE

  106. Darn, another great series. At least we get some closure. But I can’t help but feel disappointed that all the clues, story lines, etc. won’t get explored in a slightly longer more satisfying way.
I am sure at this point the writers (not that I blame them) are just rushing to clear/wrap up whatever they can.
But some closure is better than none (producers of Journeymen, you should release a DVD set, so it can rot on the store shelves).
I guess this means more reality shows. Great,
Dancing with America’s biggest idiot loser slob has-been star XVIII, Conceited bacholar XXVII,
America’s funniest videos of idiots maiming themselves MCMVII, etc.
Oh well, with nothing on the plus side is I will have much more time for other things.

  107. maybe NBC would like to pick it up it’s got better programming anyways. Bite me ABC

  108. ABC does suck, I guess there aren’t enough homos in the show for you?

  109. Mars is one of the best shows on TV today. I hope ABC gets a clue and realizes that “reality TV,” and some of the other silly shows they air, are a fad and a joke–simply empty minded garbage. The young viewers they are trying to reach will someday grow up and tune them out because they will be looking for well-written shows that capture their emotions and imagination. I hope ABC gets the message that the “real” intelligent and influential people of the USA are about to look elswhere for “real” quality programming. Best wishes to all the Mars staff–you did a great job with the show!

  110. Plez don’t take Life on Mars off the air. It’s one of my favorite shows. I don’t know why your ratings aren’t higher. Maybe it’s the time slot. Plez give it another season to catch up. Love this show!!!!!!!!!!

  111. PLEASE EVERYONE WRITE ABC and tell them what a HUGE mistake they are making in cancelling LIFE ON MARS at the address below:
    http://abc.go.com/site/contactus.html

  112. I am starting to hate network television. The good shows usually get the axe. I can’t believe that Life on Mars is getting the plug. I am hearing that Ugly Betty will be next. What do they want? Reality TV, like American Idol? Dang, you cancel Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, and other shows that have a meaning and a purpose.Shows that make us feel good and give us a reason to use the DVR’s. ABC is starting to get on my bad side. Come on people, stop teasing us and then shanking us….

  113. Well another good TV Show..GONE… I guess we’re stuck watching Fake, acting reality shows….I swear what is wrong with my generation… (Those of us born in the 70’s) I sometimes wonder what type of shows will my kids be watching as the get to be adults..

  114. I’m glad they’ll be fashioning an ending, and *was* still watching, but put me on the fence about this one. The BBC version was so far superior in execution on almost every front, I found myself unable to move beyond a luke warm “habit” with this one. Imperioli, especially, seemed particularly cartoonish and unbelievable here (though I loved him in “Sopranos”) … bottom line, this will be a LOT less missed (by me) than a whole host of other recently booted shows on the network: Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money.
Bottom line: If you liked ABC’s take, you *really* need to dig up the DVD of the two-season BBC take on the concept. You won’t be dissapointed. (It’s sequel is currently airing on BBC American, and worth checking out, too.)

  115. I and many of my friends are moving to more and more cable channels for our viewing pleasure. Why bother getting into anything the networks put on, when after you get connected to a series they just yank it. I wonder if they factor in to any of the rating ‘who’ is actually watching what besauce I’d bet money the more educated people that spend more money (advertising) watch more of the shows that get cancelled than the trailer park denizens who sit on the couch 24/7 eating chips and watching ‘reality’ TV.

  116. I can not belive life on mars being taken off when stupid shows like wife swap and others are left on. I looked at the ratings they were not as bad as some others that are still on. This show wasnt stupid enough to keep I guess. I agree with the guy who said I am tired of network tv I am getting dish for sure now.The actors of this show was top rate I love the way everything was set from the 70’s this is to bad way to bad.

  117. It is a big mistake to cancel this well written show. Life on Mars has some of the best actors and storylines. I hope another network picks up this show perhaps SCI FI.

  118. Worried about ratings? Don’t they realize that most people (including my family) DVR and watch it later then 7 days.
*Live Ratings – Those who view programs at the time they initially are aired, excluding any DVR playback.
*Live+Same Day (SD) Ratings – Viewers watching live, as well as those who played back programs on a DVR on the same day of the initial airing.
*Live+7 Day Ratings – Viewers watching live, as well as those who played back programs on a DVR within a week of the initial airing.
Oh well, no amount of complaining will bring it back now. Remeber Firefly? Maybe now we can have a cult following of LOM.\
Amazing ABC, you finally have a hit show and cancel it before it even starts. Where do you find these people that offer the ratings? Probably too busy watching some lame reality show on another network…I have a feeling you will be conforming to the reality show genre soon too!

  119. This is the best show that’s been on network television in many years…and that said, it’s fitting that they don’t drag it out any further than artistically necessary.
Remember, Sam’s in a coma. Do you expect that to last for 5-6 seasons? It should never have been expected to go more than 15-20 episodes, and if you’ve seen the British version…well, if they end it anything like that, we won’t be disappointed.
Ending the series like this give the show to remain (for the most part) a kick-ass series from start to finish, without any seriously wasted time. So far, there have only been 2 maybe 3 episodes that went off course. The rest maintained to Lynch-like dreamscape that would have eventually worn out, if the show continued on.
Nothing lasts forever. Indeed, the best things on tv only last for a short while.

  120. I agree with the comments about the DVR, I tape Life of Mars on dvr and faithfully watch it on the weekend, abc-you’re nuts to let this show go-I told everyone here at work about it the first night it came on and eveyone watched it the next week and LOVED it!You need to give this show just a little more time-I’d bet ratings improve-or hopefully another station will be smart enough to pick it up-this upsets me very much that you’re cancelling this show-if it weren’t for Ugly Betty, I wouldn’t have any reason to watch your station

  121. I love this Show, there aren’t many t.v. shows that are not reality t.v. shows, what a shame that is, and we watch the stupid reality shows cause thats all there is to watch even on cable tv. You get good writers, producers, with a great series and it gets taken off the air, Why is that? cause people find it hard to believe? maybe so, but I think it would be cool to think that a loved one who is in a coma is living a life back in time.. Live is reality, we live it everyday, bring back some of the good shows on regular tv so those who can not afford cable can watch good shows.

  122. I Quit! I’m tired of watching network TV. To many good shows in the recent past have been canceled right when they start to find their audience. Whomever is making these decisions should be fired and blacklisted from ever getting a job in the business again.
I agree with an earlier comment, that stated that the greed in the business is destroying it from within. The compensation for all those involved in making a show is out of control. This “I’m gonna get mine” mentality is not sustainable. And I think we are all witnessing the final act of network television because of it.

  123. I am this close to giving up on regular tv. First, October Road, now Life on Mars. They reel you in and drop the guillotine. The executives at ABC need to get a clue and keep the shows that let us think on our own and get rid of reality tv. We already have too much across the airwaves. This show gives us a chance to sit on the edge of the seat and think how the events were going to pan out. Shame on you ABC!! Hope one of the cable channels picks this show up.

  124. Once again another great show lost to history. When will the networks understand one season does not make or brake a show. In a world where profits rule and viewers don’t mater anymore. ABC (ANTI BROADCAST COMPANY) has put the last nail in its coffin. I for one will not watch another show on ABC. Wake up America and stand up for good shows. Give them more then 1 season. People will watch and you might find (ABC) that in the end you will make money and have happy viewers.

  125. Life on Mars made me laugh… it made me cry… but most importantly, it made me think.
Especially the last episode. What if you COULD go back in time and talk to yourself as a little kid? What would you say? The opportunity we see Sam have is more valuable than the world itself.
    The writers are geniuses.
    The execs are imbeciles.
And Gretchen Mol is absolutely gorgeous.

  126. Another great show canceled… Like others have said, at least we will get to see a finale! (Unlike when “Journeyman” was pulled off the air some months back)
One thing always bugs me though. They say that the ratings are low, yet I have NEVER been asked by ANY form of ratings survey what I watch. Now I know that I can’t expect to be polled on every show, but not to be polled about ANY show in over 40 years of watching TV?? Something is definitely wrong with the way they come up with these so-called ratings!
Oh well, I’ll just find something else to do besides watch TV I guess, since most TV programming is all that reality show crap anyway…

  127. Its sad that one of the best written network TV shows of the decade gets canned. I guess that’s how the world is now. Cheap garbage that brings in revenue and ratings is better than something reputable…WTF!!!

  128. Life on Mars is one of the best shows i have seen in a long time and they are just going to end it. What was the Sence of even airing it

  129. This is VERY frustrating. You know, i’m just going to stop watching new shows. If after 1 or 2 seasons they are still on, i’ll rent the dvd’s.
I start to watch a new show, i really enjoy it and then it get’s cancelled. So at this point, why even start?
Let’s see, October Road, Journeyman, Jack and Jill, Lipstick Jungle, Jericho, and now Life on Mars. Aye!
However, atleast they are giving it an ending!
Hope they do that with all in the future.

  130. I agree with nearly everyone else, this is a great show I love it. I just dont get these ratings why don’t the networks keep good shows on for people who do have a brain. I guess I’ll just have to got back to watching PBS.

  131. Cannot believe that you would take off the air one of the best written shows on television. Whats wrong with you?

  132. I cannot understand the cancellation! It seems this is the growing trend with some of the networks now!It seems to me the rating system is outdated and in need of some “reality” checks of its own. If this continues I can see people watching less for fear of dissapointment! Ratings? Says who ABC? Thanks again!

  133. I think we should all just quit watching ABC for a while so they realize who their viewers are (were).

  134. The most creative show on TV, and they’re cancelling it! It was the only reason I watched TV on Wednesday nights. It was the only reason I’ve ever watched ABC. Very sad.

  135. I don’t think I have ever look more forward to watich a television show as much as I looked forward to LIFE ON MARS! What a crime (pardon the pun)!
What could ABC, of all networks, possibly offer that would top that show? Hopefully another network would see the potential and scoop it right up!
It is all down hill for ABC from here! Oh, boy!

  136. i’ll leave a comment alright. Bring back Life on Mars. One of the best shows I’ve seem and they cancel it. Bad choice.

  137. i’ll leave a comment alright. Bring back Life on Mars. One of the best shows I’ve seen and they cancel it. Bad choice.

  138. i’ll leave a comment alright. Bring back Life on Mars. One of the best shows I’ve seen and they cancel it. Bad choice.

  139. Yes…Those who say no money NO SHOW. You are RIGHT. But this is because the majority is watching dumbed down brainless crap that is served up out there. This is why we cannot keep a show where a brain is required to watch. After all these years Television has no artistic licence, well according to the numbers on the ratings.

  140. i’ll leave a comment alright. Bring back Life on Mars. One of the best shows I’ve seen and they cancel it. Bad choice.

  141. I am furious this show is being cancelld. Once again tonight’s show was supurb. Excellent storyline. Windy theme. I was so happy to see the 2B girl back. Then, sadly, I had to watch next week’s finale preview. I hope this is a SEASON FINALE, not a FINAL FINALE. ABC has to give some serious thought into actually ending such a unique show. Please, tell me this is all an April Fool’s joke.

  142. Yes…Those who say no money NO SHOW. You are RIGHT. But this is because the majority is watching dumbed down brainless crap that is served up out there. 143. I am truly convinced now that the ABC “powers-that-be” don’t know a good thing when they see it… this show was one of the best shows on t.v. with outstanding acting… you really do have to watch cable t.v. if you want to watch a decent show… I know…. let’s put another “news” program or “reality” show on…

  151. Life on Mars is such a terrific show. ABC sucks big time. I hope another network picks up LOM and it’s loyal viewers. Let’s continue to make ourselves heard and fight for this show to continue “somewhere”.

  152. If you put it in a different time slot it would do a lot better!!! I love the show, 1973 was the best year I had in my home town N.Y.C.

  153. Everyone who is posting here must also submit comments to http://www.abc.com
At the bottom of the home page is comments. Let the station also hear your complaints about this brilliant show ending. We have to do all we can to save our favorite show.

  154. Ah man. I gotta say I LOVED this show, it wasa very nice BBC to ABC treatment. The acting is superb the references the locations,EVERYTHING about this show is great. I’m gonn miss it soooo much. Really sad to see such a great show go. I guess its fine in a way. I mean the BBC version didnt end because of cancelation (I think, dont quote me on that) but its nice to know that the US version will at least have resoloution. I usually never buy a tv series on DVD, but life on mars will surely be a part of my dvd collection! LOM RIP haha

  155. common everyone dont let another awsome show go to waist !!!! i already left a comment on abc7.com im trying everything life on mars does not deserve to be canceled it has such a good story line and great potention. i know it brings alot more entertainment to people instead of these pointless and FAKE reality shows.

  156. These stations just don’t get it. Sometimes it takes more than just a few weeks to build a fan base. And by the time they get one they cancel the show never knowing the show was a success. It’s to bad we live in a world today in which major networks think the viewing public wants reality shows and not good old creative writing. Thank God for cable.

  157. This is Killing me.
I LOVE this show. I CRY each week. it is done so WELL. The Actors are supurbe. The writters Most creative…….I am so sad.. so so sad.
    PLEASE KEEP IT GOING PLEASE
I WAS BORN IN BROOKLYN IN 1953. GREW UP ON LONG ISLAND….MY NAME IS MARINO……… I HAVE LIVED IN SANTA FE NEW MEXICO SINCE 1975…….HEY WAKE UP. KEEP THIS SHOW ALIVE…YOU SCREWED CAUSE YOU GAVE IT NO P.R. IT NEES A BLAST.PLEASE

  158. Unbelievable, the one and only show I watch on network TV gets canceled. I guess quality doesn’t sell in the good ol’ USA anymore. Somewhat like the US version of Top Gear never made it to airplay. It is so sad that a well acted, thoughtfully written dramatic series with an amazing cast is unable to thrive in our current network mindset. Whatever happened to a TV exec throwing the dice to attempt to build a viewership on a quality show compared that didn’t get great ratings right of the bat? No wonder the major networks have completely lost me to the likes of BBC America, USA and the numerous Discovery options. I don’t know if it a problem with the network execs or if the American audience has little interest in using their brains when making programing choices compared to having everything served up to them on the “reality” plate. ABC, please do not cancel this show or USA, please pick it up. I am truly disappointed that my favorite new show of the season is going away. Reminds me of the reruns of Keen Eddie I caught on Sleuth, though I did not catch that show during it’s initial run, it was a superb, quirky concept that deserved more that it received from the network bosses……….AIG type decisions anyone? Bet the network lackey that cancels LOM is sure to get a huge bonus.

  159. figures the one show I actually enjoy! maybe if they stuck to one night people could figure out when it was on. and maybe if they didn’t put up against other big money makers !! How about Monday night when there is NOTHING else to watch! great show, plot and cast, hate to see it go! LOVE IT!

  160. Well I would say to any writers with a project with substance, take your ideas to HBO, SHOWTIME,TNT
The Networks would have cancelled Mad Men, Californication,Tudors, Sopranos after the first season probably, because of ratings.
The Networks will be all Reality shows soon.

  161. And reality shows suck – don’t we get enough reality living in reality!!!
I think Life on Mars is one of the best shows this year and I am totally bummed out that it is going away – they could have done so much with it!!
The Networks need to get a grip and think of people sometimes and not always what “makes Money”!!!!!

  162. Like many others have posted, I hate to see a good show go. I just found out last night, my wife and I though it was the season ending. Then we heard it “series finale”, DAMN. We do not watch TV much, but on wed. when our boy goes to bed and we have our down time we planned on wathcing LOM.
We knew it was going to end sometime, but not this soon. The first few episodes I would ask my wife,”How are they going to keep this going?”. I liked how there were kind two stroys going on at the same time. The task at hand and then when you got into what that episode was about it drew you back into Sam’s delima.
Well, here’s to a great show hope the end does it justice.

  163. I can not believe that this show is going off already. I would look forward to Wed. nights every week so that I could watch Lost and then Life on Mars. You gonna cancel Lost now also? I do not think that I will be giving ABC a chance at any new shows. You get one that you really love and then it is canceled just like that. I hope it at least ends with some sort of happy ending. Very upsetting.

  164. I loved this show and am highly disappointed to hear that it is not being picked up by ABC for another season. I would follow it to any other network if they are intelligent enough to see its potential. I loved the actors and characters they expertly portrayed. I loved the music, the attitudes and strangely enough – the clothes! I was only 2 years old when the show is set to take place and I was enjoying looking at this history period through adult eyes. I was really looking forward to the characters developing and growing with one another. I just find it odd that shows in the past which ended up being among the longest running series of all time started out with very low ratings for the first AND second seasons – M.A.S.H. is just one example. It takes t-i-m-e . . . long-lasting relationships don’t always happen overnight.

  165. With the exception of True Blood, Life on Mars was the only new show I stuck with this season. The storytelling hit a good rhythm this spring and the characters were becoming increasingly layered. The 70’s setting and quirky premise added something extra. My favorite episode was Things to Do in New York When You’re Dead (Hey, it’s possible to appreciate stunt casting when care is taken to really make it work!) Ah well, R.I.P. Life on Mars.

  166. Please do not cancel Life on Mars. The cast is terrific and entertaining. The show is ingenious. I also love the guest stars they have on. I was also a fan of the British version.

  167. jus wanted to post my comment DONT DO IT we love this show thats all lol

  168. PLEASE bring it back. We really enjoy the show~

  169. This is hands down, one of the best shows on TV. Outstanding cast, fantastic writing. It will be missed.

  170. This show is so well written and acted it would be a shame for it to go. perhaps abc loss can be another networks gain. I really hope someone else picks this up it is so good. We really dont need another eality show

  171. I knew it was too good to be true, this is one of two shows I watch on a regular basis. This is an outstanding show at every metric. At least it will have closure. I wish (quality show+time=money) was an actual equation.

  172. I cannot put into words my disappointment with ABC’s cancelling of “Mars”. With the amount of regurgitated trash on TV these days, reality shows and the lack of originality in writing why not cancel the only series that sparks thought or evokes nostalgia and emotion. Well, i guess this makes space for some more love triangle smut that seems to be dulling the senses of all Americans these days. I would hope some other network picks up the series and can continue the intrigue that “Mars” has brought to an otherwise boring and predictable tvland. By the way the soundtrack is the best to date. I would watch it to have the music alone. Good luck ABC (ya right).

  173. This series was the talk at our water cooler it will be deeply missed. What a pour decision on your part.

  174. I am really sorry that “Life on Mar’s” will not be continued. I have enjoyed the series and will mss it for sure. It is diffinity a sci-fi story line but catching for sci-fi lovers. I am glad it isn’t just leaving but will have a story line to explain the process of the serius. Thank you guys for that part of the show.

  175. Finally ABC had a great show, but what do they do? Cancel it! I’d like to know what kind of nit-wits at ABC cancel an edgy, incredible show with great acting like Life On Mars, but keeps crap like Dancing With The Stars, The Bachelor, Super Nanny, and Lost on for years. MORONS!!!! Well, once Life On Mars airs its series finale, I definitely won’t be watching ANYTHING on ABC. I hope ABC rots in television network hell!!!

  176. they want quality television but yet they cancel the quality shows that everyone enjoys like eli stone, life on mars, and I would be here years if i named anymore. why not try giving them a shot before you give them the axe in the first week. Maybe instead of writing for shows you should write for commercials.

  177. Networks did the same thing with the show Cane, two years ago, With Jimmy Smitts, the acting was too good and there was way too much plot, for the average reality show viewer. not enogh sex, Take it off the air. ABC stinks bring back LIFE ON MARS

  178. Life on Mars is a great show.I can’t believe ABC is getting rid of this show.It deserved a second season to try to catch on.I believe this is the only show that I can remember that I got into that was cancelled after one season.I have been watching TV sitcoms since the mid 1970’s.The Unusuals….really! ABC should bring back Cop Rock! That was a real winner. I hope ABC stays in the toilet forever.Everybody boycott ABC!

  179. I can’t believe they cancelled Life on Mars. It was one of the best shows on TV. So much better than Law & Order and I watach all of these. USA or some other cable company should pick this show up.

  180. How many “reality” shows are on tv? Cheap to make and people are stupid enough to watch them. Something like Life On Mars didn’t stand a chance. Quality writing and acting is just too expensive to make. Networks don’t have the patience (like they did with Seinfeld) to let a good show get a following going. Didn’t ABC cancel Alias too? ABC (A- already B- been C-cancelled). If it’s a good show and it’s on ABC don’t worry, they’ll cancel it soon. I’m not bothering to waste my time watching the trash they replace Life On Mars with.

  181. What a disappointment! This is one of my favorite shows. It’s a shame that they can’t make it work. Why don’t they get rid of those “reality” crap shows and leave LIFE ON MARS on?

  182. The Unusuals…give me a break ABC. The cast of Life On Mars is TOP NOTCH!!! This replacement crap is a joke. They have an Exceptional show with an Outstanding cast. Boycott ABC you bet. Two of their best shows are leaving the air this year Life On Mars & Lost ABC your a LOST cause.
    Good bye ABC!!! You SUCK

  183. ABC = ALL BORING CRAP, without life on Mars. I hope the CW network or USA will pick up the show. With Monk ending on USA, they would be wise to pick LOM. I will no longer be watching ABC. Wait a minute, I never did before LOM. Thank you ABC for this. I guess you don’t want a Fan favorite show on your network.

  184. I started late with The Shield and The Sopranos and caught up on DVD and they are no more. Now I have been watching and enjoying Life On Mars, thinking that I got in on the first season of a real entertaining show. All of a sudden there is a preview for the Series Finale. Wait SERIES Finale, not Season Finale! I am so disappointed. Apparently there is a large market for this show – just no one ever polls us. I think that we have the beginning of a support group for the “If I Like the Series It Will Definetly be Cancelled” crowd. Anyone here like Moonlight, October Harvest or Jericho??? Also, Cupid was down very well by Jeremy Piven and I thinl that it was cancelled. I do not think this actor will change things. He is still the gay policeman from Will and Grace to me. (sorry).

  185. OOps… That was October Road. If numbers are important, where do they get them from???

  186. WOW! Look at all the fans that are BIG time disappointed in ending LOM!!!Most have grown to love the show and the characters–and look forward to seeing it every week! Not another show quite like it!!What a big mistake! Who is making such decisions for ABC? You really did it this time! We’re furious!! You Suck!

  187. Great show…..What now. There was not another that had a combo of suspense, drama, comedy and romance …Was a big hit in my house.

  188. I just can’t believe there isn’t something else they could do with the show.. like trying a better time slot to see if it could do better. It was the ONLY show i watch on ABC repeatedly.

  189. I have not tuned in to ABC since NYPD Blue went off the air, until “Life on Mars.” So.. .I guess (once again), that I won’t need a spot for ABC on my “favorite channels” list.

  190. This really blows.I guess we are stuck with all the brain dead,so called reality shows.ABC has lost my viewership, what’s next?Desperate Housewives?
    Lowell and Diane

  191. Very sad about Life on Mars being canceled. We love the show and never miss it. I’m surprised they don’t have more feedback from Boomers who love the musical score on the show. Great actors…great script…

  192. Very sad about Life on Mars being canceled. We love the show and never miss it. I’m surprised they don’t have more feedback from Boomers who love the musical score on the show. Great actors…great script…

  193. Life on Mars is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Jason O’Mara, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, Jonathan Murphy and Harvey Keitel are individually incredible actors and make up one of the best ensembles ever. As both science fiction and procedural drama I think it is outstanding.
“We felt it was the right thing to do for the producers and the fans and creatively.” No, the right thing to do would have been to not change the night it was on, not take it off for months at a time and not cancel it shortly after it came back on the air.

  194. “Bang bang shoot ’em up destiny?”
Well personally I’m beginning to think that destiny is just a bitter pill to swallow. Thanks abc for not even trying to humor me. It’s cash your chips in time….without a shadow of a doubt. I am going to look for kojak reruns

  195. They keep garbage like Big Brother & Survivor, but they kill anything w/good story–oh, and actors!
Why do we bother. Life On Mars is great. Another wasted show.
    d.

  196. This goes to show that the BRASS at ABC knows nothing about good TV. Life on Mars was awesome. The storyline, the charcters, the actors, the MUSIC! They’ll keep on crap like Scrubs which has outlived its usefulness about three years ago. They continue to put on garbage like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice which are simply unwatchable but cancel Life on Mars.
Who is in charge over there and they should be fired immediately!

  197. If ABC needs to cut costs, why don’t the execs start with their own paychecks. Life on Mars was a great show and I am more than disppointed as a stupid reality show will most likely take it’s place. Talk about cost, Dancing with the stars has to cost a bundle with costumes and medical insurance like the hospital bills with a few of the stars needing operations because of injuries. LOM was not just an ordinary cop show. It had a bit of everything…sci fi, humor, a bit of romance. ABC wake up. Not everyone loves those idiotic reality shows. I hope soome other network picks up LOM!

  198. ELI STONE WAS A GREAT SHOW! LIFE ON MARS IS A GREAT SHOW!WHY? WHY? WHY WOULD YOU CANCEL THESE GREAT SHOWS???? MAYBE WE SHOULD STOP WATCHING YOUR NETWORK. YEP… THAT’S THE TICKET BRING THEM BACK OR WE’LL EVEN STOP WATCHING “LOST” AND YOU REALLY DON’T NEED THAT RIGHT! PUT THEM ON ONE OF YOUR CABLE CHANNELS.

  199. Canceling this show is a crime. Blame the bad ratings on the network for not promoting it properly. There were some of the most compelling characters created on network TV in a long time. My hope is that it becomes the next Star Trek in that perhaps the network will eventually listen to the fans and bring it back.

  200. I saw every episode well produced, directed, casted and especially acted ….. I’ll miss it.

  201. This is the first time I have ever ever ever written to any network about discontinuing a show…and I am a total sci-fi nut and I have mourned a few, but this one was sooooo brilliant. Kept you guessing, stretching your imagination and curiosity and wonder about this universe. Come on folks, this was interesting and brilliant. You didn’t give it a chance. The marketing department just didn’t do their best on this one. I screamed tonight when it was over and didn’t even know about it when it started. This is a shame. Finally a show about humanity worth watching and you snatch it away just when we are getting attached to it. I am so disappointed!!!

  202. I agree with all of the people. I have the finale on my DVR and I am so sad that I can’t watch it yet. I really liked this show. I thought it was well written, likeable characters and good actors. THis is only one of a string of shows that I got into and was yanked. ABC shame on you, what happened to letting good things simmer over. I think that there is too much noice in the world that some of the gems need a little longer to get their steam building. Between ABC and NBC they have axed every show that I liked… Pushing Daisy’s , Journeyman, Daybreak, and now Fox sounds like they are going to yank Terminator and Doll House. Of course Cupid will be around for years! I could barely watch it. Then again Neilson has never tracked my habits either.

  203. The finale was brilliant. Once again, kudos to the writers; however, I am sad. Mars is being replaced by a new cop show, the Unusuals, but I will never understand why this is replacing Mars. The best show to come to TV in my lifetime. I am so sad it’s gone.

  204. Well, who would have guess that Life On Mars was really secretly a big long dream of an astronaut on a Mission To Mars. Guess an original series premise had to end on a original and unexpected ending. My hats of to ABC for bringing such original series over the last two years, but with the crap thats replacing it my TV will be turned off for a long while. Not sure how many advertising dollars can be drawn for turning away viewers, unless Nielsen really has that many brain dead viewers that tune only to reality shows or cheap thrills. I remember doing a ratings book for them one season three years ago and only one show out of the bunch I selected in my log survived. Either my ratings were ignored or I was outnumbered by morons watching the tube. Goodbye Pushing Daisies, Dirty Money, Ugly Betty, Eli, say farewell Lost, etc etc…. now comes ugh… Samantha Whatever, some kind of freakish Motherhood comedy, another budget cop show Unusuals… crap.

  205. Our entire family is disappointed for the series to end. My husband is 52, I’m 49 and our children, ages 20, 16, 13, and 11 1/2 could (and DID) ALL watch it without being afraid of language or situations. It was an amazing production.

  206. We are very sad to see that Life On Mars has ended. LOM was one of the most well written shows in a long time. Although listed as a sci-fi show, it had a mixture of drama, comedy and action. I’m surprised it didn’t do so well since there are so many die hard Soprano fans out there, this would sure have been a good following. I personally don’t think it was on the air long enough to actually give it a chance. We hope the network did not make a hasty decision.

  207. I missed the finale on Wednesday. Is there any way to watch it on my computer or get a copy of the last show? If someone has a copy of the last show could they make it available to me?

  208. Go to ABC.com chuck and you can watch It I believe, first 50 mins good…last 5 were weak, thought it was a stupid way to end it (my opinion) while your at tell ABC they suck, check out what they are replacing LOM’s with…F’ing Joke!! they couldnt even do the last 5 mins of the finale right….

  209. ABC you destined it to fail in the ratings! You put in on we watched it , we got into it, we told other people about it, by the time they got word of it, you put it on hiatus for 8 weeks, Then,, you start it up again, but this time you make it follow LOST so… everyone glued to their TV during the LOST hour is up and running to get ready for the next day because god forbid they left the couch from 9 to 10, so that anyone that may have thought to give it a try was not going to make the time to start watching a show in mid season while they put life on hold for an hour,,, now you cancel it. Bring it back in a 9 o’clock spot where it can stand on its own merit and watch it rise to the top of the ratings. you shortsighted idiots, the problem you have with that… how do you resurect it after that lame ending that the writers were forced to come up with?

  210. Joe…First of all, ABC put it on, and no one watched. That’s the problem. They put it on after two very successful lead-ins (“Greys” and “Lost”) and people were turning away in droves. They’re not going to suddenly start watching at 9 if no one wants to watch immediately after two hit series. As for the eight-week hiatus, that was basically the normal December/January break that nearly all series had. And lastly, this isn’t an ending the writers “were forced to come up.” They’ve clearly said this was ending they were planning, whether it was one year, three years or whatever.

  211. BRING BACK LIFE ON MARS. THE NBC EXECS MUST BE LOONEY…..THAT WAS A FANTASIC SHOW

  212. I agree with Lisa, this was a wonderfully creative show, and I thought the ending was good. I’m very sad to see this show end.

  213. I just proceeded to set my DVR to record the rest of the season for LOM, when I realized it had been canceled. First I was a fan of Eli Stone, and it was canceled. Then there was My Own Worst Enemy with Christian Slater, and it was canceled. I’m still coping with the loss of E.R., having following it from Day 1. Next we’ll be hearing Lie To Me has been terminated, as well.
Maybe my taste runs for the high quality, cutting edge mentally stimulating dramas. Maybe that’s why I’m watching reruns of Frazier and Boston Legal these days . . .

  214. Haha just tell Fox to Buy it….At Least THEY won’t cancel it…
Life on Mars – Epic and Probably top 3 in my list of all television series.

  215. That was the WORST ending ever. It looked like it was a last minute add on. I regret ever watching the series.

  216. I finally figured out why abc cancelled life on mars…..setting the ground work for a bail out!!!

  217. I can’t believe another good show is cancelled.I loved Life on Mars and Eli Stone. What is with you guys? Both were so entertaining with diversity.Instead we have more present day cops and robbers. We don’t need any more of them.I hear that only so many viewers watched but noone asked me.The Unusuals is just a way of copying Law and Order and I never watched it.Why does all the clean shows get cancelled and replaced with the gory sexual forensic type of shows. It’s amazing! Please bring back LOM,Eli,and yes dirty sexy money. Judi

  218. I hate it – this wonderful show is gone!!!! I truly enjoyed Life on Mars because it was quirky and so totally different from other shows on the tube. The executives really got it wrong on this one and its replacement – awful!!!!
The characters were wonderful in the show and the actors were great playing them – I loved this show!!!!!

  219. Life On Mars was truly one of my favorite Wednesday Night events, and will sorely be missed. Although I am happy that ABC let the writers finish up the story, the last few episodes felt rushed to me, as so many points had to be driven across and so many events occur in order to validate the development that had already occurred, but without the mountains of character development which surely was in store if the series had been renewed.
The final episode’s big reveal ties together a lot of the small cues dropped throughout the series, but I can’t help but feel that, given more time, it would have felt like the ending we knew there ‘had’ to be, instead of a surprise that makes sense.
However, I am definitely more satisfied in a definitive ending to Sam Tyler’s tale than I would have been if the poor series had been left at a cliff hanger.
Thank you to the cast and crew of Life On Mars. You’ve created a truly great series, and its loss will cut down on my time in front of the television.

  220. This is bullshit! Im sick and tired of people canceling the good shows and leaving the trash stay on the tv. Bull Shitting a last show together isn’t right. Writers sit in dark rooms for days months even year to write this work. Finish the first season at least that so you can make money off then box set jerks. People do like this show, it’s just a bad tv slot.
    ps burn in hell…
    thank you

  221. Dear ABC, I just loved Life On Mars, and looked forward seeing it every week. I have never missed a show, and I loved the actors.
I was shocked when it was’nt on last week, and did’nt know it was being canceled. I’m just very disappointed. I wish there were more shows like that one, so creative and well written, fun, and exciteing. It had it all. I am so sad. Now I don’t have a (FAVORATE SHOW) anymore. I wish sucsess to all the people that were on that show, and hope to see them again in the next time travel, hahahahahaha. Thank you, and God Bless.

  222. Great another show I liked taken off the air after one season. Personally I don’t have the energy to get involved in anything again. I give up! Thank god for books!

  223. SAVE THIS SHOW! Or at least let’s hope some other network has the smarts to pick it up. After all, we’re a year into starting up a fan base (money saved)that is still growing.
It would be a great addition to the Sci Fi network.

  224. Hi everybody! I live in Guadalajara, Mexico and they just aired the first 4 episodes of Life on Mars. I think this show is EXCELLENT thus far, and now I’ve found out that they just cancelled…. Is not fair….I demand justice here!! I’m so sick of realities I agree that they’re for short minded people. I’m going to miss Sam Tyler and I’ll watch the rest of the series but I’d feel so sad now that I’m aware of the close ending. I was hoping that LOM just follow the path of his brother in BBC, with another serie derivated from it (ashes to ashes) Oh, the humanity……

  225. My heart is totally broken! Again and again, I’d watch ‘Life On Mars’, only to afterwards tell my friend, ‘Another great episode of Life on Mars’!
This show was well done, original, well acted and surprising.
I’m very disappointed it’s being canceled. I don’t want this to happen. I want it back!

  227. Well, here we go again. I’m hooked on “Castle.” Being an author myself, and catching his little “inside inuendos” is fun. The characters are just nutty enough. My husband is enjoying “The Unusuals.” I watched it last night and liked it, but nothing like LOM. “Lie to Me” is another fave. If they don’t want us to only watch the reality shows like AI, DWTS, etc., then they should listen to the viewers when we tell them what we want and what we like! If we can’t have LOM back, for heaven’s sake, puhleeez keep “Castle” in place? My god, we’ve lost ER forever now, give us a break, will ya, Mr./Ms. Programming Director Guru God Person!!

  229. I’m so sad that Life On Mars will not return. I fell in love with this show, it was one of the first in a very long time that I looked forward to every week.
    PLEASE….ABC…..Bring it back!
If it’s not possible, thank you for a great one, and thanks to the actors and all involved for giving me a show to get lost in every week. 🙂

  230. David Bowie said it best-
Ground control to Major Tom Ground control to Major Tom:
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground control to Major Tom: Commencing countdown engine’s on
Check ig-nition and may God’s love be with you
This is ground control to Major Tom, you’ve really made the grade!
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear,
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare
This is Major Tom to ground con-trol, I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in the most peculiar way
And the stars look very difeerent today
For here am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world
Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do

  231. Like many of you I can’t stand reality shows. ABC, you guys got one right with LOM. Maybe you should do a reality show of television network executives passing bongs around then making programming decisions. Doubt I’d watch that one either.

  232. Does ABC not remember another show that didn’t have great instant ratings. Hmmmmm what was the name of it again???? OH YEAH STARTREK!!!! IDIOTS I never missed a show and told everyone about it and now you pull it after only one season. For what another reality show that sucks like the rest of them. Bye-bye ABC this is one person that won’t be watching your programing anymore.

  233. I can’t believe ABC is canceling this show – it honestly is one of the best on television. My husband and I loved the show! This is crazy to cancel it – move it to an earlier time slot so that working individuals don’t have to stay up till 10-11 to watch it and see the ratings soar! ABC is crazy – they keep canceling the best shows and putting up reality crap. Ughhh, this is awful. Life on Mars is a great show!

  234. I am very, very upset that abc is taking Life On Mars off. These days there is nothing worth watching on TV but when Life On Mars came on that changed everything for me it is the best show on abc in a long time why do you people always take the good shows off and keep the stupid not moral shows on. Jason O’Mara is so darn cute and very good actor. All of the cast on Life on Mars are excellent actors go figure that you would take it off I’m not surprised abc you have such horrible shows on and now you decided to take off an excellent show like Life on Mars you should be ashamed of yourselves. This will be the last show I will ever watch on your network. No wonder your ratings are bad you always take off good shows. I am a Lost fan and I am surprised you didn’t take it off a long time ago of course you get us involved and then let’s shut it down you suck on your decisions. Take a long look at your choices of the people you hire. Thank God I can still watch Lost and that you didn’t leave us hanging on it you would have some really upset people. Put Life on Mars back on. I also watch Ashes to Ashes and now it’s going off such disgrace.

  235. I wonder if ABC is looking back after a shockingly bad 2009 summer and saying we blew it.

  236. I really enjoyed this show. It was different and had a good cast. I cant beleive that anything that is a little different, such as”Moonlight” on CBS and “Life on Mars” on ABC gets cancelled and reality shows just dominate the air waves. Iam a baby boomer, and theres a lot of us out there that LIKE these shows. Please reconsider.

  237. I think ABC has made a real mistake in canceling Life on Mars. Everything you see on TV these days is just the same thing, for the first time there was a good show with an awesome storyline and they just cut it…. I think another station sould continue the series!

  238. I really think when the TV Ratings people see that some shows have a high rating they take then off, just to let the junky shows that nobody watches have a chance. Well the TV stations just don’t get it, they are gonna keep going until families quit watching tv and just go out and rent movies. So just keep up the good work…canceling shows like dirty sexy money, life on mars and private practice. And all the TV ratings will drop like flies in a bucket.

  239. This BLOWS! I loved this show!

  240. I totally agree Aaron!! I wish someone with a clue would pick it up again. I’m sure some creative writers could unwind the ending. I was glad they did do a finale though. If the big wigs actually gave a crap about quality of programming vs. numbers then the show would have continued. Unfortunately they’d prefer to put drivel on!

  241. What a disapointment !
ABC entertainment spends more time trying to find new material than sticking with a schedule long enough for it to take off with people.
Perhaps if you gave some true commitment to the shows you select rather than bombarding people with different schedules, different shows, they could become a fan.
    Same with lipstick jungle.
You get people interested , then drop the ball.
It makes us feel manipulated and controlled, especially by these silly, boring, reality shows.
Too bad !!!!!! Makes us question getting interested in a series with you. Doesn’t last !

  242. That sucks. This show was soooooo good. I can’t believe that these supid reality shows are taking over the airways. I think they should try the show again and advertise it rite!!!! Nobody knew it was on!!!!!! ABC try again!!!!!!!!!!!!

  243. I don’t mind the idea of a good show being canceled if the finale draws some kind of real closure. The ending made no sense. All through the show, we were led to believe that he was in a coma caused by being hit by a car. He constantly has glimpses of the world he is trying to get back to and is even being contacted with clues by some one or some thing that he believes will help him get back. A very thick plot ends like a balloon being popped. I mean, come on. We are supposed to believe he is an astronaunt? And what’s with his shoe and pant leg at the end? It felt like the whole story had not been told and that he still wasn’t home. Like getting to the end of a novel and realizing that the last pages had been torn out. Very, very disappointing!

  250. It doesn’t suprise me that this show was cancelled. For some reason the network execs seem to think that everyone loves reality tv. I don’t.
I have been watching the british Life On Mars on PBS. Even though it has the same story lines it’s just not the same as watching the U.S. version.
So far after reading all these posts I don’t think ABC cares one way or the other.
I would be nice if the show was picked up and continued by another network but I wouldn’t count on it.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  282. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
