BBC Fires Jeremy Clarkson From Worldwide Hit ‘Top Gear’

The BBC confirmed it has fired “Top Gear” fixture Jeremy Clarkson after an investigation by the broadcaster determined that the longtime host attacked one of the show’s producers, BBC News reported.

The show is a global hit, said to be the most widely watched factual TV program in the world, with an estimated 350 million viewers weekly in 170 countries.

The internal investigation was reportedly headed by Ken MacQuarrie, the director of BBC Scotland. The probe reportedly found that show producer Oisin Tymon was subject to an “unprovoked physical and verbal attack.”

The BBC story quotes MacQuarrie’s report saying: “During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip. The verbal abuse was sustained over a longer period, both at the time of the physical attack and subsequently.”

The U.K. publication The Telegraph reported previously: “Lord Hall, the Director General of the BBC, is expected to announce his decision on Wednesday after considering the findings of an internal investigation. Clarkson, 54, will be thanked for his work on the hugely popular motoring show, but will be told such behaviour cannot be tolerated at the Corporation.”

The move stems from an incident earlier this month in which Clarkson apparently “spent 20 minutes verbally abusing producer Oisin Tymon, before launching a 30 second physical assault on him,” The Telegraph reports.

The BBC reportedly plans to keep the show going without Clarkson.

  1. The show will not be the show without Clarkson, so while the title will continue the show everyone loves is now dead.

  2. Top Gear as a brand may continue, but it’ll never be the massive success it enjoyed with Clarkson, Hammond and May at the helm. Those three have the most incredible chemistry and I doubt it will be duplicated. The king is dead, long live the king.

  3. Can another network pick up the show (with subtle name change) and charge on?
