Cable Channel Cancels Its Last Original Series

Viacom’s cable channel TV Land is pulling the plug on the last original scripted series it has on the air, “Teachers.”

Deadline reports that season 3B of the series, set to premiere on Jan. 15, 2019, will be the show’s final chapter.

“Following the recent move of TV Land’s flagship original series, ‘Younger,’ to Viacom sibling Paramount Network, ‘Teachers’ remained the only original scripted series on TV Land, leaving the network with no original series and no originals in the pipeline,” Deadline reports.

The report notes that a major Viacom restructuring back in January 2017 “identified six flagship brands, including Paramount Network, that were earmarked to get the lion’s share of financial resources, naming the others, including TV Land, reinforcing brands.” At the time, TV Land was running seven original scripted series.

“Since then, it has canceled three, migrated four to Paramount Network and has not greenlighted new shows, bringing its original slate from 7 to 0 in less than two years,” Deadline reports.

  1. I remember when TV Land/Nick at Night had classic TV shows on all the time, now the digitals like Antenna TV, MeTV and Cozi have all the good stuff.

  2. Hopefully, TvLand will return to its original retro-roots. I remember when they would broadcast an entire evening lineup of programming, the way it aired decades ago. Many of the shows aired where forgotten shows from previous decades, that uounger generations have never seen. Sometimes with retro-commercials–to go along with the retro-programming. (That’s one way to keep the commercial interesting enough, so people actually watch them, along with the programming). If I want to see original programming produced in 2018, there are plenty of other options already for that.
