New Band Creating a Mania That’s Being Likened to the Beatles

Apr 12, 2019  •  Post A Comment

A new group has quickly developed such a rabid following that the mania surrounding the band is drawing comparisons to the Beatlemania of the 1960s.

In a story running under the headline “BTS! We haven’t seen boy-band fandom like this since the Beatles,” CNN reports that the Korean boy band BTS is “taking over the world.”

“Their new album, ‘Map of the Soul: Persona,’ out today, is expected to demolish international sales charts,” CNN reports. “They’re about to drop a new single featuring American pop star Halsey. And they’ll bring down the walls of studio 8H this weekend when they appear on ‘Saturday Night Live.'”

The report notes that while the global impact of K-pop isn’t exactly new, “BTS and similar groups are cultivating devoted followings across the globe, elevating K-pop from a niche import to a full-blown international movement.”

Pre-orders for “Map of the Soul: Persona,” have reportedly surpassed 3 million copies, while the two most recent BTS albums — “Love Yourself: Tear” and “Love Yourself: Answer” — each sold about 2 million copies.

Among the “12 essential facts about BTS” listed in the CNN piece, we found this tidbit to be somewhat encouraging: “In September 2018, BTS became the first K-pop group to address the United Nations when they delivered a three-minute speech during the launch ceremony of UNICEF’s global partnership Generation Unlimited. They talked about their ‘Love Myself’ campaign, which was launched in partnership with UNICEF and focuses on global education and the prevention of youth violence.”

In this All Music Guide review of The Beatles 1963 second album,With The Beatles Stephen Thomas Erlewine who wrote The All Music Guide’s Rolling Stones biography, and reviews a lot of solo Beatles albums, says at the end of the very good review that still the heart of With The Beatles lies not in the covers but the originals where it was clear that even at this early stage The Beatles were rapidly maturing and changing turning into expert craftsman and musical innovators.

No one would ever say this about One Direction or *any* true boy band who are manufactured, don’t play any musical instruments, much less be very good musicians like The Beatles were, and don’t write music much less be song craftsman and musical innovators.

    242. The Beatles were NOT a “boy band”

    Typical modern day nonsense.

The Beatles didn’t influence the modern boy bands, how by getting them to form as a genuine rock band, playing their instruments for years and years working their as*es offf to make it big? By writing their own very good to great songs including for other artists including The Rolling Stones as John and Paul were already doing in 1963 as their own song writing success was just getting off the ground?

Out of over 400 great almost all 5 star amazon.com reviews from September 2016 for the remastered The Beatles Live At The Hollywood Bowl album, not one person called them a boy band which is a miracle I knew wouldn’t last, some reviewers said they were the greatest band of all time, the greatest rock band ever,or greatest rock and roll band ever,or others just didn’t say that and just said they liked the album or out of over 400 mostly great reviews of Ron Howard’s film Eight Days A Week. But sure enough in February a guy gave The Live At THe Hollywood Bowl album a 4 star review but ludicrously called The Beatles the number 1 boy band of all time.

So a reviewer who is a big Beatles fan James L.Dickinson said to him Boy Band? I take it that Led Zeppelin,(who I could never stand) The Doors, The Rolling Stones,Pink Floyd,or Black Sabbath AC/DC are all boy bands? They are a Rock n Roll band, you may of heard of the term. The rest of us know what a so-called boy band is,other than that strange comment you nailed the rest.

I can totally understand his shock and how mind boggling it is whenever he sees them called this, but I can’t believe he never saw or heard this before because just about anywhere The Beatles are written about and discussed online, idiots are constantly calling The Beatles an overrated, talentless 60’s boy band and comparing them to stupid, uncool, untalented genuine boy bands like One Direction,NSYNC,THe Back Street Boys, and New Kids On The Block etc and whatever next boy band comes out.

Amazon.com: Customer reviews: Live At The Hollywood Bowl

Many years ago some ignorant member of the site Classic Rock called The Beatles a boy band and member Reverend Rock who is a reverend, rock musician and a big Beatles fan so rightfully said, that anyone who knows The Beatles history knows it’s ludicrous to even *suggest* such a thing!

Ringo Starr rightfully said on March 25,2003,on MTV’s TRL show The Beatles Were Not A Boy Band Like Today’s male Pop Groups NYSNC, and The Backstreet Boys etc Ringo really needs to be debunking this now too because so many people ignorantly compare The Beatles to the genuine boy band One Direction.

Boy Band – Music Genres – Rate Your Music

A boy band is a type of male vocal group often put together by talent managers or record producers. The members are generally expected to perform highly choreographed dance sequences during their shows and music videos, and to have an attractive appearance.

A typical boy band features three or four members who sing R&B influenced music but do not play instruments or write their own music. This style began in the 1980’s with groups such as New Kids on The Block and New Edition achieving commercial success in the United States and it has gone through periods of popularity in various countries ever since.

Great January 2002 Toronto Star article that unfortunately isn’t online anymore and it quotes from Micky Dolenz of The Monkees,The Monkees:The Original Boy Band?

It compares them to The Back Street Boys, and New Kids On The Block and Micky Dolenz says The origin of the term boy band came from those only male vocal groups who wrote no music & played no instruments and were manufactured, and The Monkees were hired as actors to play a fictional genuine rock and roll band like The Beatles,The Monkees didn’t even play any instruments on their first several albums, and even though Mike Nesmith wrote some good songs, all of their big best known hit songs were written by professional song writers.

Thankfully there is no ludicrous mention of The Beatles in this article.

This is a great London Times review of the remastered The Beatles Live at The Hollywood Bowl album says it’s remarkable that The Beatles played as well as they did given that they couldn’t hear a thing beyond the screaming of 17,500 teenage girls.

They should have also mentioned the poor very primitive and limited sound systems of the time and no feedback monitors so they also couldn’t hear themselves singing and playing but the amazingly sang and played great and in sync with each other anyway.

It says that they were a lean and vibrant rock n roll band honed to perfection after toughing it out with five sets a night in rough Hamburg nightclubs.

Giles Martin,George Martin’s son who recently remastered The Beatles 1964 and 1965 Live At The Hollywood Bowl concerts rightfully says on All Songs Considered when people ask him if The Beatles were a good live band,he says they were a great live band and he mention the very limited, primitive sound systems they had back then, and says how great The Beatles played live in the studio on their first 3 or 4 albums, and that they all played their instruments very good.

He obviously means they played these first several albums live because they didn’t even have any overdubbing until 1965 so they had to play and record those albums live.

And their first albums before the great A Hard Day’s Night album were recorded on only 2 track tape, they had 4 track by A Hard Day’s Night and only 8 track for The White album,Let It Be and Abbey Road.

By the time they recorded and played live their first album Please please Me recorded in only in one day in February 1963,they had 1000’s of hours of live playing experience playing 8 hours a night from 1960-1962 in the sleazy strip clubs in Hamburg Germany and had to take speed pills to stay awake to do it,and John Lennon said every song was 20 minutes long, and had 20 minute solos in it.

Then they played successfully live in the Liverpool Cavern Club for years before they made the Please Please Me album.
