VMAs Continue Downward Trend, Hit All-Time Ratings Low

MTV’s Video Music Awards, televised Monday night, dipped in the ratings again, continuing the downtrend they’ve been on for the past couple of years.

“Monday’s kudocast on MTV drew 1.93 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49,” The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports. “That’s an all-time low for the flagship channel, down from the previous low — set last year — of 2.25 million viewers and a 1.1 in the demo. The VMAs have hit all-time ratings lows in each of the past three years.”

The telecast was down 14% in viewers and 18% in the 18-49 demo, THR reports, noting that it’s not quite as hard a hit as the past two years, when total audience fell 18% and 18-49 fell 20% both years.

“The awards were also simulcast on 11 other Viacom channels (VH1, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Network, CMT, MTV2, TV Land, MTV Classic, Logo and BETHer),” THR adds. “The 12-network telecast recorded a 6 percent drop among adults 18-49, which is a better showing than the MTV Movie and TV Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Tony Awards and Billboard Music Awards, all of which fell by double digits.”

  1. Maybe it is time for the networks to admit that Award Shows are no longer of relevance to people. 40 years ago there were three or four options for most people and an awards show may have been a better option than what the other networks were offering. This was especially true for an entire evening. But those days are over. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and the local sports channels are much stronger options and award shows have seen their time pass.

  2. Maybe it’s the crappy music they’re playing these days.
