Networks Take Aim at Summer Hits with Postseason Schedule

Jun 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

The last few years haven’t resulted in any summer hits for the broadcasters aside from ABC’s "Wipeout" in 2008, and now that broadcast’s 2009-10 season has ended, the networks are gearing up for another try, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

NBC will debut "Losing it With Jillian" on June 8, hoping that "The Biggest Loser" trainer Jillian Michaels will attract viewers during the summer months, while ABC’s pinning its hopes on "Bachelor Pad," a spinoff of "The Bachelor" and "The Bacherlorette" franchises that will debut Aug. 9.

Meanwhile, Fox is looking to "Masterchef," starring Gordon Ramsey of Fox’s "Hell’s Kitchen" to bring some ratings sizzle on July 27.

But although those shows come from an unscripted format, about half of the broadcasters’ new summer shows are scripted programs. It’s not a trend that’s caught viewers’ eyeballs, though, as past summers’ scripted shows have generally fallen flat, except for CBS’ debut two years ago of Canadian police drama "Flashpoint."
