Cable Gained Strength in 2010, Putting Broadcast Networks on Notice USA Today

This year has put the broadcast networks on notice, perhaps more than ever before, about the strength of cable television shows, reports USA Today.

While the top 4 broadcasters and basic cable gained 1% in 2010 in terms of overall viewing, the fall season has proved tough for some networks, with Fox down 15% and ABC off 5%, the story notes. A few cable hits are beating many of their rivals on broadcast, with TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles" averaging 8.8 million viewers during its 10-week run.

Five other shows topped 6 million viewers, the story notes. "Viewers don't differentiate whether it's broadcast, top-tier cable or middle tier," notes Jon Marks, senior vice president of research at Turner.
