HBO is banking on fans of the National Hockey League to be as ardent as football fans with the new sports show “24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic,” reports TheWrap.com.

HBO has been successful with "Hard Knocks," focusing on an NFL team each season. The four-episode hockey series premiered Wednesday night and will conclude with footage from the NHL Winter Classic–the annual outdoor game that will take place Jan. 1. The game will be televised on NBC, live from Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field.

Ross Greenburg, HBO sports president, told TheWrap.com, “I think what we’re proving is that showing a side of a professional sport that’s never been seen before–that’s fascinating to the average fan.”
