Fox News on-air health contributor Dr. Cynara Coomer has found out that she has thyroid cancer, a diagnosis that came four weeks after she gave birth to her daughter, reports the New York Post.

Coomer, 39, shared her diagnosis on her blog on Foxnews.com, with the goal of letting viewers know the importance of getting their thyroids checked, the story notes. Coomer will have radioactive iodine therapy in six weeks and will need to be quarantined from other people, including her baby, the story notes.

Coomer, who specializes in breast cancer and is the chief of breast surgery at Staten Island University Hospital, has a type of thyroid cancer that has an 80 to 90 percent survival rate, the article says. She underwent successful surgery Jan. 6.

"I have a big heart for my patients that have to go through cancer treatments," she said. "This gives me a better understanding on an emotional and psychological level about what they’re going through."
