OMG: Average Number of Hours Each of Us Watches TV Per Week Closing In on the Number of Hours We’re at Work

Here’s a sobering thought for the new year: We Americans watched more TV than ever last year, and our average viewing per week is approaching the number of hours that we’re at work.

We’re now averaging 34 hours a week watching TV, The New York Times reports.

That means that total viewing of broadcast networks and basic cable channels rose about 1% for the year. CBS was stable, winning among total viewers for 51 out of 52 weeks, with three of its new shows, "Hawaii Five-0," "Blue Bloods" and "Mike & Molly," landing in the top 20 programs for the year, the only new shows to accomplish that, the story notes.

Fox, meanwhile, ranked No. 1 again in 2010 with viewers between 18 and 49, helped by both "American Idol" and "Glee," while the biggest gainer among broadcast networks was Spanish-language Univision, which averaged 3.7 million total viewers for the year, the story adds.
