Overrun From Big NFL Playoff Game Pushes CBS to Prime-Time Win, Even as Golden Globes Pump Up NBC’s Ratings

CBS got help from its huge afternoon NFL showdown between the New York Jets and New England Patriots, which ran over into prime time and gave the Eye Network an outright win Sunday Night even though NBC scored well with its Golden Globes broadcast, TVbytheNumbers.com reported.

In overnight numbers that are expected to change more than usual due to the live programming, CBS wound up with an easy win in both total viewers and adults 18-49. The network finished with a 5.8 average rating for the night in 18-49, well ahead of NBC’s 3.8, Fox’s 2.5 and ABC’s 2.1. The margin was even greater in total viewers, where CBS averaged 20.4 million for the night to 12.8 million for NBC, 7.8 million for ABC and 5.1 million for Fox.

At 7 p.m. the NFL game on CBS averaged a 13.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the hour. NBC’s red carpet coverage at the Golden Globes had a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo for the time period. At 7:30, Fox’s "American Dad" earned a 1.7 in the 18-49 demo.

At 8 p.m. CBS’s "60 Minutes" had a mean score of 4.05 in the 18-49 demo for the hour, while the first hour of the Golden Globes broadcast collected a 4.3 average in the 18-49 demo. Fox’s "The Simpsons" and "Bob’s Burgers" earned a 3.1 rating and a 2.6, respectively, in the same demo for the hour. ABC’s "Extreme Makeover" collected a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo.

The Golden Globes dominated at 9 p.m. with a 4.6 in the 18-49 demo, compared with CBS’s "Undercover Boss" getting a 3.25 in the same demo for the hour. ABC’s "Desperate Housewives" managed a 3.05 in the 18-49 demographic, while Fox’s "Family Guy" and "Cleveland Show" had a 3.7 and a 2.7, respectively, in the 18-49 demo.

At 10 p.m. the Golden Globes logged a 4.45 in the 18-49 demo, while CBS’s "CSI: Miami" had a 2.35 in the 18-49 demo and ABC’s "Brothers & Sisters" netted a 2.1 in the same demo for the hour.
