CBS continues to revamp “The Early Show” in an effort to pump up the low-rated morning news program, The New York Times reports in its Media Decoder blog.

In the latest move, CBS has hired media veteran John Miller, who most recently worked in government as a deputy to the director of national intelligence. Miller joins “Early Show” as a senior correspondent, according to the report.

“The most important thing for us is that he’s going to have this major role in the mornings," said David Rhodes, president of CBS News.

Miller will report and comment on homeland security, law enforcement and related matters, the story says. Rhodes added that once Miller signaled that he wanted to leave government, there was "a lot of interest in him" from television networks, the piece adds.

After a long career in local television news, Miller was at ABC News in the late 1990s and early 2000s, interviewing Osama bin Laden in 1998 and co-anchoring “20/20” for a time.
