PBS in Mitt Romney’s Crosshairs

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney outlined measures he wants to impose on PBS, saying he wants to end government subsidization of the service, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Big Bird is going to have advertisements," the candidate told Iowa supporters Wednesday, the story reports.

Other PBS shows would be stopped under Romney’s plan. "Close them. Turn ’em off. Even some you like," he said. "I like PBS. We subsidize PBS. Look, I’m going to stop that. I’m going to say that PBS is going to have to have advertisement."

Romney added that he believes it’s "immoral for us to keep spending money we don’t have," according to the piece. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides a portion of PBS’s funding, spent $422 million in 2010, the story adds.

  1. What an idiot. PBS already takes ads, on a national and local level. So, what does he want? Ad breaks every 10 minutes? The network spent $422 million last year, of which the government only paid A PORTION. Even if the government kicked in $100 million of that, what other program in PBS taking that money away from? There are tons of programs that the US government gives billions to every year that don’t do 1/10 the good that PBS does every single day.
