Strong Start for New CBS Series ‘Rob’ — but Was It Strong Enough?

CBS’s heavily promoted new sitcom “Rob” premiered to solid numbers Thursday night in Nielsen’s overnight ratings, TVbytheNumbers.com reports. But after one airing the show’s future remains far from secure, the story notes.

The show scored a 4.1 in the key 18-49 demo, second-best for the night behind only its lead-in, “The Big Bang Theory.” It was CBS’s best number in that Thursday half-hour since “Survivor” aired there on May 13, 2010, the story reports.

But the story notes that the show, which stars Rob Schneider, will be up against the Thursday season premiere of Fox’s “American Idol” next week, and adds: “Keep in mind that back in the day ‘$#*! My Dad Says’ premiered with a 4.0 preliminary adults 18-49 rating before ultimately fading (to what still would’ve been good ratings for a comedy on any network not named CBS) and getting canceled.”

For prime time overall, CBS took a fairly comfortable win Thursday night, pulling in a 3.5 average rating in viewers 18-49 to ABC’s 2.8 average, Fox’s 2.0 and NBC’s 1.8. CBS was well ahead in total viewers with an average of 14.3 million to 8.1 million for ABC, 7.0 million for Fox and 4.5 million for NBC.

“Grey’s Anatomy” was the standout performer not on CBS, scoring a 3.8 average rating in 18-49 for ABC. But that was down 16% from the previous week.
