Big Premiere for New CBS Drama TVbytheNumbers
A new CBS drama series bowed to a big viewer turnout Monday night, despite opening against game six of the Stanley Cup Finals. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the series premiere of “Under the Dome” at 10 p.m. delivered a 3.2 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen overnights.
The program also attracted 13.14 million total viewers, far more than anything else on broadcast Monday night.
The turnout in viewers 18-49 represented a 68% improvement over CBS’s most recent summer drama premiere, “Flashpoint,” in 2008, which opened with a 1.9 average. The number for “Under the Dome” was also much stronger than the 1.8 for the season premiere of “Hawaii Five-0” back in September. And it was the highest number for a CBS summer premiere since “Fire Me Please” also delivered a 3.2 in 2005.
The 3.2 for “Under the Dome” matched NBC’s 3.2 average in 18-49 for game six of the Stanley Cup Finals, which turned out to be the series finale as the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup by dispatching the Boston Bruins. NBC coasted to a win for the night in viewers 18-49, while CBS, which filled out the rest of its prime-time lineup with repeats, still took a narrow win in total viewers.
NBC’s Stanley Cup game was up a whopping 94% from the equivalent number for game six a year ago. The report notes that the numbers are subject to more than the usual adjustments due to the nature of live sports programming.
ABC’s two-hour “The Bachelorette” rose 12% from last week to a 1.9 in adults 18-49, while “Mistresses” slipped 8% to a series-low 1.1.
Fox put up only one fresh program, “The Goodwin Games,” which ticked up 20% from last week to a 0.6 average in 18-49.
For prime time overall, NBC’s 3.1 average rating led the way in viewers 18-49, followed by CBS’s 2.1, ABC’s 1.6, Univision’s 1.4 and Fox’s 0.6. CBS topped its rivals in total viewers with 8.2 million, followed by NBC (7.9 million), ABC (5.5 million), Univision (3.6 million) and Fox (1.7 million).
