NBC Skates to Ratings Win as Stanley Cup Finals Surge TVbytheNumbers
A huge increase in viewership for game one of the Stanley Cup Finals lifted NBC to a win in the Wednesday night ratings, based on overnights for the key 18-49 demo.
TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the game, in which the Chicago Blackhawks outlasted the Boston Bruins in triple overtime, was up a whopping 140% from last year’s opening game, delivering a 2.4 average rating in viewers 18-49. The report notes that the numbers are subject to more than the usual adjustments due to the nature of live programming.
Fox came in a close second, with two installments of “MasterChef” delivering a 2.2 average in 18-49 at 8 p.m. (up 4% from last week) and a 2.4 at 9 p.m. (down 8%).
CBS aired mostly repeat programs, with its one original episode, “The American Baking Competition,” rising 9% from a week ago to a 1.2 average in the 18-49 demo.
ABC put up a mix of reruns and new programs. Among the fresh episodes, “Family Tools” equaled last week’s 0.9 in adults 18-49, “How to Live With Your Parents” slipped 8% to a series-low 1.2, and “The Lookout” matched its 1.1 from a week ago.
For prime time overall, NBC’s 2.4 average in 18-49 led the way, followed by Fox (2.3 average), Univision (1.4), CBS (1.2) and ABC (1.1). CBS nosed ahead in total viewers, averaging 6.44 million to NBC’s 6.42 million, Fox’s 5.6 million, ABC’s 4.0 million and Univision’s 3.6 million.
