Amazon Rescues Canceled Series Deadline

Amazon has come to the rescue of a TV series that was canceled by its original broadcaster. Deadline.com reports that the streaming service stepped in to save the British period drama “Ripper Street,” ordering a third season of the BBC crime series after it was canceled in December.

Amazon has also bought U.K. subscription streaming rights to the previous seasons of the Victorian era drama, the story adds. In the U.S., the show aired on BBC America. Its cancellation “elicited an outpouring of lament from fans,” the article notes.

“This is the first time a VOD service has ridden to the rescue of a drama series after it was axed by a UK network," the piece reports. "The ‘Ripper Street’ order is part of Amazon’s commitment to invest in original content as well as a move that continues to increase its local rivalry with Netflix."

The third season is set to start filming in May, the piece notes.
