Firefighters came to the rescue of an NBC News correspondent who got into trouble on a field assignment. The New York Daily News reports that Miguel Almaguer was rescued after he became stuck in mud during a report on the heavy rains in Los Angeles.

Almaguer had waded into a stream flowing from a mudslide, where he delivered his report while thigh-high in mud, the story notes. He lost his boots in the rescue.

The correspondent was in an Azusa neighborhood that had been evacuated after the rains left a hillside unstable and led to mudslides.

“Almaguer thought it a good idea to show the depth of the mud by standing in it,” the story notes. “Wrong.”

He realized he was completely stuck when he tried to get out, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Brian Jordan told the newspaper. A pair of nearby firefighters dragged him out.

“Members of the media were told to leave the area following the incident. The neighborhood had already been evacuated because mud was flowing throughout the streets and into homes,” the report notes.
