A country singer who had a series of chart successes in the late 1990s has died at age 43. Seattlepi.com reports that California native Kevin Sharp died Saturday. His death was confirmed in a statement on his official website.

The statement said: "Kevin died due to ongoing complications from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues."

The report adds: "Sharp's mother told CNN that the complications stemmed from cancer treatment Sharp underwent when he was a teenager. 'He had a good, strong heart,' she said. 'He's not hurting anymore.'"

The article notes: "Sharp made his country debut in 1997 with a cover of Tony Rich's single 'Nobody Knows.' The single topped the Billboard country charts for four weeks. His debut album, 'Measure of a Man,' also produced several Top 5 singles including 'If You Love Somebody' and 'She's Sure Taking It Well.'"

Sharp was reportedly active in the Make-a-Wish Foundation, wrote a book about his experiences battling cancer, and toured as a motivational speaker.
