Comcast Lashes Out at Netflix

Comcast is going on the offensive against Netflix. TheWrap.com reports that the move comes after Netflix criticized Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable, with the cable giant saying that the streaming service’s opposition is “based on inaccurate claims and arguments."

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and Chief Financial Officer David Wells sent a letter to shareholders that criticized the merger, saying it would lead to one company having too much control of the broadband Internet market.

“Comcast is already dominant enough to be able to capture unprecedented fees from transit providers and services such as Netflix,” the letter said. “The combined company would possess even more anti-competitive leverage to charge arbitrary interconnection tolls for access to their customers. For this reason, Netflix opposes this merger.”

Jennifer Khoury, Comcast's senior vice president of corporate and digital communications, took issue with Netflix’s statement, saying: “No company … has had a stronger commitment to openness of the Internet than Comcast and we are the only ISP in the country that is currently legally bound by the FCC's vacated net neutrality rules.”
