Discovery Cancels Live Show in Wake of Deadly Accident

Discovery Channel has pulled the plug on a widely publicized live program that was slated to air next month. Deadline.com reports that the cable channel canceled its “Everest Jump Live,” announcing in a statement Sunday that the decision was made “in light of the overwhelming tragedy at Mt Everest and respect for the families of the fallen."

An avalanche killed 13 Sherpa guides in what NPR describes as the single deadliest accident on the mountain. The guides had been setting up a route for climbers to follow when they were hit by the massive snow slide.

The decision comes after NBC News, which is producing the Discovery program through its Peacock Productions, said Friday that it would assess the future of the production.

Discovery said the star of its special, Joby Ogwyn, was at base camp when the avalanche hit. The two-hour show, which was to feature Ogwyn as he climbed the mountain and then jumped from the top wearing a winged suit and cameras, was slated to air May 11.
