Batman, which was a huge hit on TV almost 50 years ago, is coming back to TV, although in a much more serious, dramatic form.

The new hour-long drama series, ordered by Fox Broadcasting from Warner Bros. Television, is called "Gotham," and features a young Bruce Wayne. The series also presents the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and Gotham’s villains, such as the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman, The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed reports.

The cast includes Ben McKenzie of “Southland” as Gordon, along with Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney, the article reports. The pilot was written by Bruno Heller of “The Mentalist” and directed and executive produced by Emmy nominee Danny Cannon.

Back in the 1965-1966 season, ABC debuted "Batman," starring Adam West as the adult Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. It was a very campy half-hour fantasy that aired two new episodes weekly, on Wednesday and Thursday nights. According to "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows," for its first season both nights of the series "ranked among the ten most popular programs of the 1965-1966 season."

Here's a preview Fox has released of "Gotham"

And for old times' sake, here's a short highlight video of the old, campy "Batman" series from the 1960s:
