'We're Really On to Something Here': Are Naked Dating Shows the Next Big TV Trend? And What Started It? TheWrap
Broadcast and cable programming executives are seeing a flood of pitches for reality shows that star naked people, reports TheWrap.com.
One executive told the publication that he has already seen about a dozen pitches for dating shows featuring naked contestants. “Most of the pitches seem to focus on a similar premise: In an exotic location, a man and a woman -- both unclothed -- size each other up and consider dating,” the piece reports.
The surge appears to have been prompted by the success of Discovery’s “Naked and Afraid,” which tracks a man and a woman as they are placed unclothed in a wilderness and figure out how to survive for 21 days.
VH1 is the first network to greenlight a naked dating show in the U.S., giving an order to “Dating Naked,” which will blur out frontal nudity but show back views, the story reports.
“Yes, I've definitely seen a trend of naked-themed shows,” said VH1 executive vice president of original programming and production Susan Levison. “That's why we were so keen on piloting ours quickly and getting it onto the air. We felt that we're really on to something here, and you obviously always want to be the first one in. I think we are going to be able to achieve that.”
Fox is also reportedly considering a naked dating show, the piece adds.
