‘High School Musical 2’ Dances to Free TV in 40 Countries
“High School Music 2” is going global.
The hit sequel from the Disney Channel has signed on with free-to-air TV stations in more than 40 countries outside the U.S. in new television deals announced by Disney ABC International Television. Among the countries to embrace the craze for the film are the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Russia, China and Japan.
“As its success on Disney Channels around the world indicates, ‘High School Musical 2’ is as loved as its predecessor, resonating with kids and tweens in countries across the globe,” said Ben Pyne, president of global distribution for Disney Media Networks. “We’re confident that this success will be repeated as we premiere on free TV over the coming months. And if the result from our launch on Net 5 in the Netherlands is any indication, we’re well on the way. All of these efforts will help reinforce and position this important franchise to our consumers around the world.”
Among the free TV broadcasters set to return to “High School” are the BBC in the U.K., RTI in Italy, ProSieben in Germany, M6 in France, RTE in Ireland, Channel 1 in Russia and SABC in South Africa.
The U.S. premiere of “High School Musical 2” in August broke Disney Channel ratings records and stands as the most-watched cable telecast ever, drawing more than 17 million viewers. Last month, the movie premiered on Disney Channel U.K. as the channel’s top telecast of all time. Disney said more than 55 million viewers around the world have seen the sequel.
Meanwhile, Disney ABC executives announced they have licensed terrestrial TV rights to ABC Family series “Kyle XY” to the BBC in the United Kingdom, where it will air on BBC2 next year. ABC Family just picked up a third year of the series at home.
“‘Kyle XY’ is part sci-fi mystery, part comedy, part drama and wholly engaging. We are so pleased that this compelling series will be airing on BBC Television,” said Sue Deeks, head of series for BBC Program Acquisition.
