NBC Local Media Builds Out New York Hub
WNBC-TV, the NBC Universal flagship station in New York City, plans to launch a 24-hour local news channel on a digital tier and build its operations at 30 Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan into a multiplatform content-production center.
Local Media Division President John Wallace’s announcement Wednesday was billed as NBCU’s “next step in its long-term strategy for its East Coast operations.” NBC News late last year created a content center that houses MSNBC. A new West Coast news and content center that includes KNBC-TV is in the works.
NBC will remain 30 Rock’s largest tenant and the home of NBC News and NBC Sports. It also will house NBC Entertainment franchises “Saturday Night Live” and Conan O’Brien’s “Late Night,” as well as WNBC.
All other business operations will move to a new state-of-the-art facility to be built at an unidentified location, as will employees currently working at three additional Manhattan sites, the announcement said. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, and the move is expected to take place in 2009.
Plans for the new building include a childcare facility, a conference center, a health-care and fitness center, and an employee commissary. It also will incorporate environmentally sound practices.
The strategy also keeps in mind “the potential for additional business unit relocation and aggregation across the tri-state region,” the announcement said.
As NBC Universal expands its emerging business platforms, the company will continue to look for additional opportunities relating to its East Coast development strategy.
“This is the next step in WNBC’s mission to diversify its operations and become the leading multi-platform content provider for the New York market,” Mr. Wallace said. “In order to remain successful, local stations must put the appropriate weight on the additional platforms beyond their core television station. Consumers are demanding relevant content, round-the-clock, on the platform of their choice. This new structure better positions us to meet that demand in a way that’s synonymous with the WNBC brand.”
